A hiking information board near the library points to three short family circular walks in Gravières. The Virade du Batistou adds an educational trail of about 3.5 hours; along the Chassezac, there are riverside walks. The church, sanctuary and panoramic road offer further highlights. To plan your trip, you can first consider whether short walks, heritage, the river or a longer educational trail should shape your stay.
Hiking trails, the river and an adventure farm
The board near the library points to three short family circular walks. As information boards like this can be moved or updated, check the signs during your visit. The banks of the Chassezac near Gravières are suited to riverside walks. If you are also planning to swim, bear the season and water level in mind: swimming conditions and possible restrictions can vary.
L’Attrape-Rêves is a leisure park and adventure farm in Gravières. Visitors can observe, feed and stroke donkeys, pygmy goats, chickens and pigs; animal encounters are subject to on-site conditions. A barefoot sensory trail invites you to use your senses of hearing, touch and smell in nature. Alongside riverside walks, you can therefore choose between animal encounters and a sensory trail for different kinds of experiences.
Educational trail and views from Serre de Barre
The Virade du Batistou is a 6-kilometre educational trail with 280 metres of elevation gain. The route includes some uphill sections and stairs; it takes about 3.5 hours. This makes it a different time commitment from the short circular walks. Set aside time for it as a main activity if you would like to combine exercise with insights into the cultural landscape.
The educational trail offers insights into the farmsteads, dry-stone walls, hydraulic structures, basins, gardens and fortified paths of Gravières. Its themes range from traditional building styles and water management to gardens and paths. Serre de Barre, by contrast, puts the landscape centre stage: the ridge reaches 909 metres, dominates the Chassezac Valley and, in suitable weather, offers views across the Ardèche Cévennes.
Serre de Barre is also a paragliding launch site; supervised launches with flight instructors take place there regularly. Activities and supervision may vary by season. If you are planning a supervised launch, check in advance whether one is available during your visit.
Church and sanctuary
The Church of Saint-Victor de Gravières has been classified as a historic monument since 1907. Its origins are Romanesque. Two side chapels and a massive bell tower were added later to the single-nave church. The church also contains a carved stone slab from the 14th century depicting the Tree of Jesse. The architecture and stone relief offer different points of interest if you are interested in architectural history or sacred imagery.
Private and group tours of the church are available on request. If you are planning a guided visit, arrange a time in advance. The Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes sanctuary is also part of Gravières’ religious history: local masons built it in 1874 with the support of the community. A circular path with fifteen rosary oratories leads to a chapel topped with crenellations and crowned by a statue of the Virgin Mary. Unlike the Church of Saint-Victor, the focus here is a path with several oratories.
Panoramic road and crossing the Chassezac
The “Au cœur des vallées cévenoles” panoramic road starts in Gravières, heads towards Thines and runs along the upper Chassezac. It offers a different focus from the walking routes and adds a scenic drive to the options.
The history of the crossing over the Chassezac also shapes the area’s connections: the medieval La Pontière bridge once linked Les Salelles with Gravières, until floodwaters swept it away. It was replaced by a crossing that can be submerged. Check local crossing conditions before travelling over it.
