Seventeen kilometres of the Train de l’Ardèche railway line run through the territory of St. Barthelemy Le Plain. In the commune, the line winds picturesquely along the hillside, shaping the landscape. The Descente de Clauzel is on a different scale: the marked hiking trail around the commune is 2 kilometres long. The railway line and hiking trail offer two different perspectives on the area—a longer stretch through the commune and a route with a clearly stated distance.

Walks and railway scenery

The Descente de Clauzel is a specific option for anyone wanting to include a marked hike in their plans. At 2 kilometres, it is a short route, and its stated length makes it easy to distinguish from the railway line. The Fond Cheynet sundial is also intended for walks and hikes: it is set up as a rest stop. Together, they highlight two different aspects of getting around the area—a named route and a place to take a break.

Bridge, fishing and rock formations

The Pont du Duzon connects the plateau with Tournon-sur-Rhône and is used by both vehicles and pedestrians. Since its restoration in 2021, it has had footpaths.

Fishing is well established on the Duzon. The Cuves du Duzon, by contrast, are notable for a geological feature: watercourses have carved hollows into the rock there, reaching up to 50 metres in diameter. This measurement gives a sense of the scale of these formations. Fishing and geology thus offer different points of interest for a stay focused on the river area.

Ruins and Romanesque architecture

The grounds at Mordane are laid out around the ruins of the Château de Mordane. The heritage theme here is shaped by the surviving ruins and the grounds themselves. The church of Saint-Barthélémy offers a different architectural perspective: it is Romanesque in style and has a massive square bell tower. The two descriptions emphasise different features—the ruins and grounds at Mordane, and the architectural style and striking shape of the church tower.

Saffron and honey with advance arrangements

At the Saffron farm, you can visit the two saffron fields throughout the year by prior arrangement; a tasting is included. Free group tastings are available on request. Honey tastings at M. et Mme Vallon are also available by prior arrangement. Honey production and direct sales are part of the visit there. If you want to plan these culinary experiences, remember that arrangements are required—unlike choosing a hiking or architecture theme, these visits need to be scheduled.

Find the right hotel for your interests

When looking for hotels in St. Barthelemy Le Plain, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: should your trip centre on the short marked hike and railway scenery, heritage and rock formations, or culinary visits? Advance arrangements are part of planning saffron and honey tastings.
