Saint-Didier-Sous-Aubenas combines peaceful walking paths along the Ardèche with the climb to the Oppidum of Jastres. This offers two distinctly different perspectives: a riverside path and views from the Falaise de Jastres over the Saint-Didier plain, the Ardèche Valley and Aubenas. There is also a notable cycling crossing over the Ardèche and a small cultural and historical detail. When planning your stay, you can organise the options by mode of transport and interest: a walk, a hike to the plateau, cycling, or a glimpse of local history and wine.

Riverside scenery and the Falaise de Jastres

The town lies in a bend of the Ardèche River, between the Château d’Aubenas and the Falaise de Jastres. The cliff is associated with three named caves: Baume Chambrière, Grotte de la Soie and Grotte du Figuier. This combination of river, cliff and cave names provides several specific landmarks in the landscape. The Pas du Renard is a particularly striking viewpoint: as you climb, views open up over the Saint-Didier plain, the Ardèche Valley and Aubenas.

On foot to the oppidum and across the plateau

The thousand-year-old « Pas du Renard » path runs up the cliff to the Oppidum of Jastres. The route combines a specific hiking trail with the named viewpoints; the oppidum itself is accessible on foot and offers views over the Ardèche Valley and Aubenas. From there, hiking trails cross the plateau towards Saint-Privat, Lussas, Lavilledieu and Vogüé. If you would rather head for a clearly designated viewpoint, the oppidum is the specific destination; the trails across the plateau, by contrast, lead towards four named places. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.

Cycling and crossing the Ardèche

For crossing by bicycle, the 600-metre cycle lane on the RD104 bridge is a useful option. The bridge is between Saint-Privat and Saint-Didier-Sous-Aubenas and enables cyclists and pedestrians to cross safely between the two banks of the Ardèche. Cycles Moulin is one option for bike rentals: you can rent a bicycle there for anything from half a day to a whole week. The rental shop is 200 metres from several cycle routes and close to the Voie verte. This can be reached along the Ardèche without using the national road. Rental terms can change; check them before hiring.

Local history and wine

There are two specific options for culture and local produce. The small bell at the Saint-Didier parish church has been a historic monument since 1942, providing a clearly defined link to local history. The Caveau des Vignerons Ardéchois in Saint-Didier-Sous-Aubenas offers wine tastings and wine for sale. If you plan to visit, check opening arrangements before your trip.
