Příbram District offers different ways to experience nature and history. In Brdy, marked trails lead to explorations on foot or by bike; in Příbram and Nový Knín, mining and gold take centre stage, while Březnice Chateau offers a different perspective through art, noble history and gardens. Other highlights include the covered staircase to Svatá Hora, a route to the Pilská Reservoir and water activities at the Orlík Reservoir. When planning, it is therefore worth first asking whether you would rather spend time outdoors, delve into cultural history, or also set aside time by the water.
Brdy: trails and visitor information
The Brdy Protected Landscape Area has been protected since 2016. Marked tourist trails run through Brdy and are intended for exploring on foot or by bike. You can choose activities to suit your preferred way of getting around and follow the marked routes.
Do not expect refreshment or souvenir stands, toilets or waste bins along the trails. Basic visitor facilities are generally available in the gateway villages. This distinction is useful when planning: food and toilets are not necessarily available along the route, while the villages at the access points provide a place to find basic facilities. If you plan to spend a longer time out, you can take these conditions into account in advance.
Access points towards Brdy
Obecnice and Orlov u Příbrami provide specific orientation. Obecnice offers free parking for up to 300 cars and access towards Tok, Jordán, Třemošná and Klobouček. Orlov u Příbrami offers visitor parking near the Brdy Protected Landscape Area; from there, there is access towards Třemošná and the central Brdy area. Třemošná is therefore a destination mentioned for both access points, while Orlov also provides access to the central area. Check the latest information on parking and access before setting out, as arrangements may change.
Another route with a regional focus is the Fabiánova Educational Trail. It links sights in Podbrdy and is intended for tourists and cyclists. This adds another way to discover the landscape and sights along the way to the trails in Brdy.
From silver mining to gold
The mining history is presented from different perspectives in two museums. The Příbram Mining Museum presents historic mining buildings and underground workings associated with silver, uranium and other ores. The Nový Knín Gold Museum focuses on gold mining and also covers local crafts, industrial history and gold-panning championships.
This contrast makes a difference when choosing what to see: Příbram focuses on historic mining sites and various ores, while in Nový Knín the subject ranges from gold mining to crafts and competitions. Those interested in mining can thus discover different facets of the subject, rather than focusing on a single metal or just one aspect of its history.
Chateau and art history in Březnice
Březnice Chateau offers a different perspective on the region's history. Its exhibitions cover the history of noble families and art styles from the Renaissance to the 19th century. One specific historical landmark is the Lokšany Library: founded in 1558, it is one of the oldest libraries in Bohemia.
The grounds offer their own highlights, too: the chateau has a Renaissance garden and an English-style park. Together with the exhibitions, they offer a contrast between art and noble history indoors and two distinct types of garden. If you choose historic sites for several themes rather than just one exhibit, Březnice offers a range of points of interest.
Trails, views and water
A covered staircase connects the centre of Příbram with Svatá Hora. The route to the Coronation Altar has approximately 365 steps. The complex is open to individual visitors; check visiting arrangements before your trip. A route to the Pilská Reservoir leads to a viewpoint above the water with a place to sit, as well as to a wildlife enclosure. This offers two different ways to explore: an architectural route between the town centre and the site, and a trail with a view and a wildlife enclosure.
At the Orlík Reservoir, options include boating, rowing, pedal boating, surfing and other water activities. Orlík boat services also offer sightseeing trips to Zvíkov Castle and Orlík Chateau. Check the current sailings before planning around them. Unlike the marked trails in Brdy, the focus here is on the water: you can choose between activities on the reservoir and a trip to one of the two named chateaux.
