Nečín is known as stone country, with many abandoned and flooded quarries. Forests and marked hiking trail sections complete the picture; the local past ranges from an archaeological find to legends about hills and paths. If you choose a destination based on specific landscape and history themes, Nečín offers several clearly distinct points of interest.

Granite, Forests and a Far-reaching View

The extraction of high-quality grey-white granite in Nečín dates back to the 18th century. The quarries therefore also point to the history of the stone that gives the place its character as stone country. Many of the quarries have been abandoned and flooded—a distinctive feature of the landscape.

More than half of Nečín’s area is forested. In the summer months, the forests are used for mushroom picking and recreation. Visitors planning their stay around this will find a specific seasonal attraction here: the forest and granite history shape the place in different ways.

A topographical landmark is Nečínská Besídka: at 508 m, it is the highest point in the municipality. In clear weather, the view from there extends as far as the Šumava Mountains. The view therefore depends on clear conditions; the elevation also makes Besídka an easily identifiable landmark in the municipality.

Two Marked Hiking Trail Sections Compared

The trail sections described differ both in their markings and in how they pass through Nečín. The blue-marked hiking trail leads from Ouběnice into the municipality of Nečín. At the Skalice, rozc. signpost, it joins the red-marked hiking trail; this section is 3 km long.

The yellow-marked trail connects sections of the green-marked hiking trail. Between Vrchy, rozc. and Žebrák, it passes directly through Nečín and is 3.4 km long. The lengths offer a simple comparison: the yellow section is 400 m longer than the blue one. The blue route leads into the municipality and connects at Skalice, while the yellow one passes directly through Nečín.

This lets you choose based on the route that matters for your plans: access to the municipality with a connection to another marked trail, or a section that passes directly through Nečín. Check the routes before your trip, as they may change.

Archaeological Find and Local Legends

The Nečín bronze hoard links a specific discovery site with a history reaching far back in time. Stonecutter Josef Červenka from Nečín found a bundle of bronze needles at Pudilův lom in Besídka. Historians date the find to 2,500 years ago. The Nečín bronze hoard is kept at the National Museum in Prague and served as the basis for Eduard Štorch’s book “Bronzový poklad.”

The find site and the place where the hoard is kept are two different locations: it was found at Pudilův lom in Besídka and is kept at the National Museum in Prague. The story of the find thus leads from Nečín to Prague, while its starting point lies in the municipality.

There are also legends about two hills. According to local legend, Varta Hill near the settlement of Skalice once guarded the Sedlčany Road, a branch of the Golden Trail. A castle is also said to have once stood on the wooded hill of Bělohrad. These accounts should be understood as legends; they differ from the archaeological find, whose age has been determined by historians.

Vančátka Quarry and Seasonal Activities

North of Nečín lies Vančátka Quarry, the largest of the small flooded granite quarries. The flooded quarry is used for swimming; in winter, ice bathing or ice skating are possible there. If you are planning one of these activities, check current access and local conditions in advance.
