Sedlčany combines urban history with cultural events, nighttime stargazing and opportunities to get outdoors and be active. When choosing where to stay, it is worth first considering whether you want to focus on historic buildings, a particular festival, viewing the sky through a telescope or a longer hike. The options differ considerably: some depend on specific dates, while others give a visit a historical, astronomical or sporting focus.
Urban History Across Several Eras
The permanent exhibition at the Městské muzeum Sedlčany spans the period from prehistory through the Middle Ages and early modern period to the present day. Archaeological finds from the Bronze and Iron Ages are displayed alongside finds from the Celtic oppidum of Hrazany. At the end of the exhibition is a memorial dedicated to the life and work of composer Josef Suk. Today, the Stará radnice houses the town museum.
Kostel sv. Martina offers another perspective on history: the early Gothic parish church dates from the third quarter of the 13th century and was built by the construction workshop of Milevsko Monastery. It was first mentioned in writing on 1 February 1364. Its Baroque furnishings include an altar from 1704 with a painting added later by J. Umlauf. The construction date, first written mention and later furnishings mark different historical periods.
Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie, also known as Církvička, is another architectural landmark. The Baroque cemetery church was built between 1732 and 1734 on the site of an older Gothic chapel and stands on a hill on the northern side of Sedlčany. Together with Kostel sv. Martina, it illustrates different periods and types of construction: an early Gothic parish church and a Baroque church with a Gothic predecessor.
Festivals and Music Throughout the Year
The tradition of the historic ROSA festival was revived in 1990. Since 1994, ROSA has been held regularly in June as a town festival in Sedlčany. If you want to plan your trip around this festival, June is a specific point of reference. Sukovy Sedlčany is a separate event: an annual international music festival held in Sedlčany. The date and program vary from year to year, so if you are traveling for the festival, check the details of that year’s edition.
Stargazing and Outdoor Activities
The Hvězdárna Josefa Sadila Sedlčany offers public nighttime stargazing every Saturday. Direct observations through the large telescope are accompanied by projected images of the objects being observed. There are also explanations and discussions covering various areas and topics in astronomy. Saturday is therefore a specific point of reference if you want to plan your trip around stargazing.
The Sportovní areál Luční has a 560-meter-long track for inline skating and cycling. Younger visitors can use climbing structures and a pyramid; teenagers and adults have access to parkour obstacles and an outdoor gym. This offers activities that differ from the town’s cultural and historical attractions. As facilities may change, it is best to check the current details before your visit.
On Foot Toward Křečovice
The Sukova pěší stezka starts in Sedlčany and follows the valley of the Mastník stream to Josef Suk’s birthplace in Křečovice. The route also leads to the Drahoušek observation tower. The marked trail from Sedlčany to Křečovice is 11 km long. This is a different biographical connection to Josef Suk from the memorial in the museum: the memorial focuses on his life and work, while the trail leads to his birthplace. Your trip can therefore combine two distinct focuses—culture in town and a longer walking route.
