Starosedlský Hrádek lies at the beginning of the picturesque, gently sloping valley of the Hrádecký potok. The history of the area comes to life through several buildings that can be clearly dated; ponds and mill technology also shape different aspects of its cultural landscape. It is worth planning separate visits to the castle and the mill, as their access arrangements differ.

Stream Valley and Ponds

The Hrádecký rybník is one of the significant landscape features in the cadastral area of Starosedlský Hrádek. The Zámecký rybník has a different role: it was created for fish farming in the 15th century and is still used for this purpose today. The Hrádecký rybník is notable for its importance to the landscape, while the Zámecký rybník stands out for its continued use. Together, the bodies of water illustrate two different aspects of the local area.

Castle History and Sgraffito

The first written mention of Starosedlský Hrádek dates from 1376. The Renaissance castle originally developed from a 15th-century fortress. Valuable 17th-century sgraffito adorns its exterior facades. The dates refer to different stages: 1376 to the written mention of the settlement, the 15th century to the castle's origins, and the 17th century to the facade decoration.

Chapel, Granary and Mill

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity was built at the end of the 16th century. Its well-preserved painted decoration was restored several years ago. Services are occasionally held in the chapel. The small manorial granary is broadly dated to the second half of the 16th century. Its exceptionally well-preserved roof structure, with a Renaissance king-post truss, is a distinctive architectural detail. The dates are close, but not equally precise: the chapel dates to the end of the century, while the granary is broadly assigned to the second half of the 16th century. Their functions also differ: one is a religious building, the other a manorial granary.

The Panský mlýn preserves the complete equipment of a roller flour mill, a unique semi-artisanal installation and a double mill frame. This adds the technical equipment of a mill as a distinct focus alongside castle architecture and religious buildings. Visits are possible by prior arrangement.

Plan Your Visit and Journey

The castle has not been open to the public in recent years. Before visiting, check whether access arrangements have changed in the meantime. A prior arrangement is required to visit the Panský mlýn; bear this in mind when including the mill in your travel plans.

Starosedlský Hrádek can be reached from Březnice via cycle route No. 8216. If you plan to arrive by bike, you can include this route as a specific travel connection in your plans.
