Krepenice offers two distinct reasons to visit: the Krčín Renaissance Fortress with its Renaissance architecture, and paths for walking and cycling. Consider whether you are mainly interested in exploring historic architectural styles, discovering the surrounding area on foot, or following a cycling route. There is one clear condition for visiting the privately owned fortress: visits are possible by arrangement with the owners.
Krčín Renaissance Fortress: the fortress and its history
The Krčín Renaissance Fortress was completed in 1584. The protected fortress complex includes the main building, the northwest building with a gate, the southwest and southeast buildings, and the so-called sheepfold. The perimeter wall with the eastern gate, the northern outbuilding, the access bridge, and all parcels within the complex are also protected. The protection listing therefore covers individual buildings and structural features, as well as the parcels comprising the entire complex.
The fortress’s surviving features include a perimeter wall, two gates, and three tower-like corner bastions. The central palace contains remnants of original wall paintings depicting mythological themes. The chapel bell tower in Krepenice also has a distinctive architectural feature: its floor plan is shaped like half of an irregular octagon.
A deed of donation to Břevnov Monastery dated 1045 mentions Krepenice. The deed is described as a 13th-century forgery. The date 1045 therefore refers to the deed; it should not be confused with the fortress’s completion in 1584.
Walking routes and views
A blue-marked hiking trail passes through Krepenice. Nearby is the Drbákov-Albertovy skály nature trail: it is seven kilometres long and has eleven stops with views of the Vltava Valley. This gives you two different options for planning a walk: a route through the village and a longer nature trail in the surrounding area.
From the Libešov hills, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Krepenice and the surrounding area. Forests cover 30 percent of the Krepenice area. The forest share describes land use, while the viewpoint on Libešov offers a specific view of the village and its surroundings. If you are interested in the landscape and trails, you can consider these two perspectives separately when planning, rather than treating them as the same kind of outing.
Cycling and planning your stay
Cycling route 301 connects Krepenice with Krásná Hora nad Vltavou and is 23 kilometres long. Cycling route 8132 runs from Vojkov to Krepenice. The two details provide different guidance when choosing a ride: route 301 has a stated connection and length, while route 8132 lists its two endpoints. Check the current route before setting out on a cycling trip.
When planning your stay, you can focus on the fortress, a walk, or a cycling trip. Visiting the fortress requires prior arrangement with the owners; the walking and cycling routes offer other ways to explore Krepenice and the surrounding area. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide which of these interests will shape your stay, and then look for accommodation for your trip to Krepenice.
