Hvožďany lies at the foot of the southwestern Brdy; its entire cadastral area is part of Třemšín Nature Park. The village brings together protected buildings, landscape themes and exhibitions. Another highlight is the Petráčkova Hora educational trail near Vacíkov, which explores the history of gold and local habitats.

Landscape and educational trail

The Petráčkova Hora educational trail starts and ends in Vacíkov, is six kilometres long and has seven information boards. It follows both paved and unpaved forest paths. Its subject matter includes gold, its properties and the history of gold mining; it can also be enjoyed as a walk through interesting habitats on the edge of the Brdy Protected Landscape Area (CHKO Brdy). The route thus brings nature observation and a cultural history topic together. Its length, path surfaces and number of boards provide practical details to help you plan your visit, while the trail’s subject matter extends beyond a single topic.

Buildings in Hvožďany

The Hvožďany fortress stands on a low rise in the southwestern part of the village. A small pond fed by the Hvožďanský stream lies at its western foot. The solid building has an upper storey and three wings arranged around a central courtyard. Its setting and architectural form both help define the site: the rise and pond describe its location, while the courtyard reveals the layout of the building. The Church of Saint Procopius and the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is also among the village’s protected buildings; it is a protected immovable cultural monument.

Another historic building stands in Vacíkov: the hunting lodge was built in 1874–1875 as an elaborately carved wooden structure on a stone base. Its wooden floors, panelling, ceilings and stairs have been preserved in their original form. The park around the lodge includes pyramidal oaks, Douglas firs and mountain pines. Unlike the multi-winged Hvožďany fortress, the lodge’s architectural character is defined by its carved timber construction and preserved wooden features.

Mill and exhibitions

Zíbův Mill in Hvožďany is a building of considerable heritage value. Its complete technical equipment as a roller mill has been preserved, including several archaic elements. The building is notable not only for its form, but also for its surviving milling technology.

The restored Špejchar Hvožďany serves as a venue for exhibitions, concerts, talks, craft markets and other cultural and community events. One exhibition focuses on the history of the municipality of Hvožďany and its surroundings, recalling the area’s agricultural tradition as well as important local figures and events. A description from March 2025 also mentions permanent exhibitions of the Hvozdansko Museum in the Špejchar, a collection of axes and an extensive collection of firefighting artefacts assembled by František Polák. If you would like to plan your stay around a concert, market or exhibition, check the dates in advance.

The sights offer different highlights: the fortress and hunting lodge showcase distinct architectural styles, the mill preserves its technical equipment, and the Špejchar combines exhibitions with events. The educational trail complements these cultural themes with the history of gold and local habitats. When choosing where to stay, you can decide whether to focus on architectural and technological history, exhibitions or the surrounding landscape.
