Procevily combines a compact, irregularly laid-out village with St. Barbara’s Church on a hill above the settlement. The village lies about 4.5 km as the crow flies west of Březnice, at a turn-off from Bubovice. The church stands at an elevation of 591 m, near the road between Bubovice and Vševily. It offers far-reaching panoramic views.
St. Barbara and the Village Landscape
St. Barbara’s Church is designated an immovable cultural monument. Its history began as a chapel built by Jesuits from Březnice. This chapel origin adds a cultural and historical dimension to its hilltop setting. Next to the church is a small cemetery for people who have died in Procevily, Volenice and Vševily.
The settlement as a whole is also of interest: together with the nearby church on the hill, it is designated as having urban-planning value. Two different scales are involved. St. Barbara is designated as an individual immovable cultural monument, while the urban-planning designation covers the entire settlement. The building and the village structure can therefore be seen as distinct but interconnected aspects of the place.
School and History
The school in Procevily was built near the church; lessons began there in 1835. In 1913, children from Procevily, Volenice and Vševily, as well as from the hamlets of Nouzov, Cihelna, Na drahách and Lesní chalupy, attended the school. The two dates represent different aspects of local history: 1835 marks the start of lessons, while 1913 indicates the school’s catchment area at the time.
A much earlier historical reference dates back to the 14th century. At that time, Procevily belonged to the archbishop’s estate of Rožmitál. Together with the later history of the school, this spans a broad period: from the medieval connection to Rožmitál, through the start of lessons, to the places from which children attended the school in 1913.
Hiking Connection to Altán Hill
If you would like to include a hike in the surrounding area alongside exploring the village’s history, you can make Altán Hill a focus of your visit. The hill and its surroundings are most easily reached from Procevily or Volenice. The small settlement of Nouzov on the edge of the forest can serve as a starting point for a hike to the summit; the best way to get there is from St. Barbara’s Church in Procevily.
There are several reference points for this hike: Procevily or Volenice for approaching Altán, Nouzov as a possible starting point, and the church as the best starting point for the route to the summit. The focus differs from exploring the village: here, the hike and summit take centre stage, while the village visit focuses on the church, settlement and history. You can decide which topic you would like to spend more time on.
