A hall dating from 1558, interiors from the Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Empire periods, and a forest trail with learning stations show how varied the themes of a stay at Březnice Castle can be. You can choose according to your interests: architecture and collections offer different perspectives from the family-oriented activity in the forest. The park, garden, Jewish heritage and local brewing tradition are also among the aspects that characterize the place.
Library, Castle and Building History
The Lokšany Library at Březnice Castle dates from 1558; its hall is the oldest castle library hall in the Czech Republic to have been preserved in its original form. The religious buildings provide other clear points in time: the Church of St Ignatius of Loyola and St Francis Xavier was built between 1642 and 1650, while the synagogue acquired its present form in 1874. These different dates offer a way into the building histories of the library, church and synagogue.
Carlo Lurago built the church together with his brother Martin. Its single-nave interior with side chapels is richly decorated with stucco and numerous works of art. A self-guided tour of the castle introduces the individual noble families and interiors from the Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Empire periods. This brings both the families’ histories and the various periods represented in the rooms into focus.
Gallery and Jewish Heritage
The Ludvík Kuba Gallery displays works with motifs from Březnice and South Bohemia, as well as portraits, figure paintings and genre scenes, in four halls. The collection thus combines regional motifs with a range of pictorial genres. Those who consider art and architectural history as separate areas of interest will find a distinct perspective here, alongside the castle interiors.
Another point of interest is the Jewish cemetery in Březnice. The Hebrew tombstones, in their inscriptions and forms, are reminiscent of those in Prague’s Old Jewish Cemetery. The comparison therefore concerns both the inscriptions and the design of the tombstones.
Park, Garden and Forest Trail
The castle grounds extend south into an English-style park and further east into an expansive castle game preserve. The castle park and garden are open to the public free of charge at the times listed. Access arrangements may be adjusted for operational or safety reasons, so check current access information before your visit.
The Tušílkova Trail offers a different focus: it is a forest trail for families with children, with various stations offering educational activities. Here the nature trail and learning stations take centre stage, while the other themes mentioned mainly concern building history, art and collections.
A Local Brewing Tradition
The Herold brewery in Březnice brews beer using traditional technology and a high degree of manual work. This adds another aspect of the place to its historic buildings and works of art: local beer production and its artisanal character.
