Háje can be explored from more than one perspective: marked hiking trails run through the municipality, while the place name and historic buildings tell the story of its settlement. A former uranium mine shaft and a geological site add two distinct themes. When planning your stay, it helps to choose your focus: would you like to get to know Háje through its trails, explore the development of the settlement, or learn about the geological site?
Marked Hiking Trails Through Háje
Three marked hiking trails run through Háje. The Příbram–Svatá Hora–Háje–Smolotely trail names the village between Svatá Hora and Smolotely. The Příbram–Za Lukama–Háje–Kácíň–Horní Líšnice trail also passes through Háje. The third trail, Háje–Spálený–Velká Leč–Obory, starts in Háje and runs via Spálený and Velká Leč to Obory.
The routes differ in the role Háje plays in each: on the first two, the village lies along the route, while it is the starting point for the third. The names also identify the other places on each route. When comparing the marked trails, you can therefore first consider whether Háje should be your starting point or a stop along a route.
The Name and Settlement History
The name Háje preserves the settlement’s origins in an old grove. The earliest written records refer to the settlement in 1603 as “vsí novou na Hájích”; the same name also appears in Slivice’s oldest parish register, from 1636. In 1653, the settlement’s name was shortened to Háje. The dates mark different stages: 1603 represents the early written form, 1636 its later appearance in a parish register, and 1653 the shorter form of the name. The meaning of the name and its later forms can thus be understood as aspects of the same local history.
Architecture and Mining History
The former school building in Háje dates from 1907. Individual cottages along Road II/118 and around the former school represent Háje’s original rural architectural style. These details complement one another: the year of construction gives the former school building a place in time, while the cottages exemplify rural architecture at several of the locations mentioned.
Another historical layer is Shaft No. 16 Háje–Věž, part of the former uranium mining operations. In 1975, it was considered the deepest mine shaft in Czechoslovakia. The year places this fact in its historical context; together with the old settlement name and the school building, it brings out the different themes in the area’s history.
The Háje Geological Site
The Háje geological site is a shallow, disused quarry measuring approximately 40 × 40 metres. Its wall is 2–3 metres high, and there are also small surface exposures. The area, wall height, and exposures describe specific geological features and convey the scale of the site. Alongside hiking trails, local history, and architecture, this provides a clearly defined geological focus.
