Around Doubravice, you can explore a range of subjects: the geology of Pačíska, the medieval fortified site of Ústupenice, and museums in the surrounding area. When planning, it is worth bearing in mind the different conditions: access to Pačíska is off-trail, while opening arrangements and seasonal accessibility are relevant for exhibitions.

Landscape and geology at Pačíska

Pačíska is a 504 m-high hill south of Doubravice, in the cadastral area of Doubravice u Sedlčan. There is a former quarry and natural outcrops of metamorphic rocks from the Paleozoic Sedlčany-Krásná Hora Island Belt at Pačíska. Crystalline limestones, possibly from the Zbirov sequence, occur in the old quarry. Other rocks include metasiltstones, quartzites, metagreywackes and conglomerates. The possible assignment to the Zbirov sequence applies to the crystalline limestones.

Pačíska shapes the gently sloping valley of the Sedlecký potok stream. Its geological sequence continues eastward in isolated elevations at Šiberný, south of Doubravice. The Šiberný monument stands at the foot of the viewing hill, on the side facing Pačíska. The geological site is considered worthy of protection because it is one of the few occurrences of the youngest strata of the Central Bohemian Island Belt.

Access conditions are also important for planning: access to Pačíska is off-trail, and the site is more than 250 m from the road. Before setting off, check whether local access across the land is possible. The elevation and geological outcrops describe the site; they do not indicate a walking time.

Medieval fortification remains

The fortified site of Ústupenice lies about 3 km west of Doubravice. Its oval shape is accompanied by a ditch on the north and east sides. The foundations of a rectangular building with wall remains are visible on the site. This building was probably a palas. This allows visible building remains to be distinguished from their possible historical interpretation: the foundations and wall remains can be seen, while the identification as a palas remains a probable interpretation.

Museums and technical structures in the surrounding area

At the Vysoký Chlumec open-air museum, rural buildings, water-powered technical structures and small religious objects offer insight into building and everyday life. Most of the objects date from the 18th to the early 20th century. Visitors can view nine buildings in total; seven of them can be accessed through indoor or special exhibitions, or a seasonal exhibition. Before your visit, check which seasonal areas are accessible.

The Sedlčany Town Museum traces the development of the region from prehistoric times to the recent past through finds, documents and objects. Its permanent exhibition comprises seven halls on two floors; the museum is wheelchair accessible. Check the current opening arrangements before your visit. The two museums have different focuses: Vysoký Chlumec features rural buildings and technical structures, while Sedlčany explores regional history through collection objects.

Another stop is the site of the windmill near Příčovy. It is located on the red-marked route connecting Sedlčany and Nalžovice and is freely accessible. The route reference is specific: it describes the connection between Sedlčany and Nalžovice, not a route from Doubravice to the windmill.

Highlights for your stay

If you are interested in geology, the focus at Pačíska is on outcrops and the sequence of different rock types; plan for the off-trail access and make sure to check in advance whether local access across the land is possible. For medieval building remains, Ústupenice offers a different subject, with visible foundations and a possible palas interpretation that should be treated with caution. The museums, in turn, make regional history accessible through buildings, technical structures, documents and objects. At Vysoký Chlumec, pay particular attention to seasonal accessibility; at the Sedlčany Town Museum, check the current opening arrangements. These differences can help you choose the focus of your explorations based on your interests, without treating the different access conditions as equivalent.
