Kamýk nad Vltavou combines a river-shaped landscape with buildings from different periods and designated routes. When planning your trip, you can choose between historic sites, an annual festival, and activities on cycling and hiking trails.
Discover cultural history through the buildings
The former Vrškamýk Castle once served as a summer residence for the earliest Bohemian rulers. The ruins of Kamýk Castle, also known as Vrškamýk or Hunec, have visitor facilities and an information trail. Its foundations were archaeologically investigated and stabilised in 2009 and 2010. Kamýk Castle is continuously open to the public; whether the observation tower and souvenir sales are available depends on the operator's capacity. Check these arrangements before your trip. A green-marked route leads from Kamýk nad Vltavou to the Vrškamýk Castle grounds; the walk takes about 20 minutes.
Another destination for architecture enthusiasts is Manský dvůr No. 2. This large historic complex has been preserved largely in its original state; some cellar rooms remain, while two wings have been rebuilt. The oldest masonry dates from the Late Gothic period. Several portals and Gothic plasterwork on the northern perimeter wall have also survived. The complex was extensively remodelled during the Renaissance, when it acquired sgraffito decoration and distinctive vaults. The building thus brings together Late Gothic features and later alterations.
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is one of the most important monuments in Kamýk nad Vltavou. In Nový Kamýk, the church that survives to this day retains significant parts of its original early Gothic form from the 13th century. These include a rectangular chancel with a groin vault and massive stone ribs. Its surviving features give the church a distinct place alongside the later Renaissance traces at Manský dvůr.
In the surrounding area, in the cadastral territory of Dražkov, there is a Jewish cemetery that served the Jewish communities of Dražkov and Kamýk nad Vltavou. About 300 Baroque and Neoclassical tombstones, as well as a historic mortuary, preserve the memory of these communities. The cemetery lies outside the exact locality; its history adds to the picture of the cultural heritage around Kamýk.
Kamýcké prášení also draws attention to local customs and traditions. This historic festival is held annually, usually in late August or early September. The programme includes a historical procession through the town and contemporary performances near Vrškamýk Castle. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the dates.
River landscape and routes
Kamýk nad Vltavou lies in a valley shaped by the Vltava River. The landscape around Kamýk alternates between dense forests, meadows, and fields. This setting offers a different focus from the area's architectural history: you can plan your trip around cultural sights or designated routes, without having to fit both interests into a fixed itinerary.
For hikers, the circular route “Between the Kamýk and Orlík Dams” is a separate option. It starts and ends in Kamýk nad Vltavou. As route conditions can change, check the route before setting out. The green-marked route to the Vrškamýk Castle grounds has a different destination and a stated duration of about 20 minutes; no duration for the circular route is provided here.
Several different route options are also mentioned for cycling trips: EuroVelo 7 passes through Kamýk nad Vltavou. The Vltavská cyklistická stezka is designated as a stage from Kamýk nad Vltavou to Prague. These details refer to two different cycling routes. When planning your trip, you can therefore distinguish between a route that passes through the town and the named stage with Kamýk and Prague as its endpoints.
The Kamýk Bridge is part of the history of river crossings: its first piers were built in 1887, and an iron structure was placed on them. As part of the Vltavská čára defence line, a total of 64 structures were built in a very short time. Together with the castle, church, and Manský dvůr, these sites offer several historical perspectives on Kamýk, without limiting your trip to a single attraction.
