Two buildings from Mašov bring local history to life at the Skanzen Vysoký Chlumec open-air museum: a house and a barn. Both are worth seeing during a visit, as they tell different stories of architecture and are included in different types of tours. In addition, the hiking options and landscape information around Petrovice raise a separate planning question: should your visit focus on a single building, a longer route, or a scheduled hiking event?

Buildings from Mašov at Skanzen Vysoký Chlumec

In House No. 10 from Mašov, the black kitchen, with its vaulted ceiling and part of the chimney, was moved as a single unit. The unusual scale of this work is precisely quantified: the unit weighed 32 tonnes. The kitchen, vault and section of chimney were moved together rather than treated as separate elements. The barn has a striking feature of its own: it dates from around 1670. The same open-air museum thus presents different aspects of Mašov’s architectural history.

The barn also serves practical purposes for museum visitors: it houses the entrance, ticket office, introductory exhibition, souvenir shop and sanitary facilities. The two buildings also differ in how they can be visited. Guided Tour A includes the house from Mašov; the barn is part of self-guided Tour B. If you are interested in the history of the house, Tour A is the right choice. Tour B features the barn as part of the visit.

Hiking and landscapes around Petrovice

Near Petrovice, the Petrovicko nature trail is mainly intended for hikers; some sections are also accessible to cyclists. The trail starts in Petrovice and ends in Týnčany–Melena, and is almost 27 kilometres long. The start and finish are therefore in two different places, and the distance is another factor to include in your trip planning. At just under 27 kilometres, the nature trail is a longer hiking option, not a short walk. Cycling is explicitly permitted only on some sections.

Petrovicko Nature Park was established to protect the character of the landscape in the Petrovice area. A historical account of a Christmas hike in Kovářov describes a route through the nature park and identifies large erratic boulders and rocky knolls as typical features of the landscape. The route described is historical and is not a current route recommendation.

Pochod Krajem kamenů is an annual event held on the second weekend of September and organised by the local KČT branch in Petrovice. Unlike the nature trail, where the start, finish and distance shape the choice of route, here the recurring date is the key planning factor. If you would like to include the event in your stay, check the dates for the relevant year.
