Drahenice lies below the distinctive rise of Drahenická hora. Its highest point, Drahenický vrch, reaches 615 metres above sea level. This gives you two specific focal points to consider when choosing where to stay: castle history and heritage conservation, as well as an annual Easter walk and a cycling route through Drahenice. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether you would rather shape your stay around cultural history or an outdoor activity.

Castle and the History of Technology

Drahenice Castle developed from a fortress dating from around the 14th century. It was expanded into the present-day castle in the 16th century. The approximate date refers to its origins as a fortress; the present-day castle dates from the later expansion. The building has two wings and two storeys, a mansard roof and a prismatic tower topped by a dome. Its wings, storeys, roof and tower are specific features that help describe the castle’s architectural history.

The former estate distillery at house No. 75 is a notable example of historic technology. It is a protected cultural monument within the Drahenice village conservation area and an exceptionally well-preserved technical structure from the 18th century. Remains of the original heating system survive in the central section. The monument’s heritage designation is thus accompanied by a specific detail about the technology once used there.

Heritage in Drahenice

The Drahenice-Račany village conservation area encompasses an ensemble of vernacular architecture. Drahenice is also home to the protected Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, near the school. Memorial crosses stand at the roads and paths into the village; they were restored in 2010 and 2012. The conservation area represents an ensemble, while the chapel is a single protected building. The crosses add two specific restoration years. These different forms of heritage protection complement the histories of the castle and the distillery.

Walks and Cycling Route

The municipality organises a walk to Drahenický vrch every year at Easter. If you would like to include a walk in your stay, Easter is the explicitly stated seasonal occasion. Drahenický vrch is also the highest point of Drahenická hora, reaching 615 metres above sea level.

The Jihočeská ochutnávka cycling route passes through the Račany part of the village and through Drahenice on cycling route No. 8214; it leaves Drahenice on cycling route No. 1062. Check the route signs before setting off. On this cycling route, Drahenice Castle can only be viewed from the outside. If you are planning to visit the interior, check access in advance before making plans on that basis.
