The Olomouc District offers a wide variety of ways to explore: underground passages, a botanical arboretum, a historic pilgrimage site and unusual leisure activities each have their own appeal. Those looking to combine culture and nature will find more than one defining theme here. The sights range from archaeological finds to contemporary outdoor art, alongside experiences that put movement and landscape centre stage. You can shape your trip around the themes that interest you most.

Caves, Nature and Trails

Almost 800 metres of passages and dripstone halls in the Javoříčko Caves are open to the public. Seasonal visiting conditions may change; check them before your visit. The Mladeč Caves offer a different glimpse beneath the earth: they are an important archaeological and palaeontological site. Finds there include prehistoric human and animal bones, as well as stone tools. The difference is clear: Javoříčko focuses on accessible cave spaces, while Mladeč also showcases evidence of early humans and animals.

There are also different ways to experience the landscape outdoors. The Luhy Litovelského Pomoraví educational cycle route starts in Horka nad Moravou and runs for 17 kilometres along paved forest paths. Sluňákov in Horka nad Moravou combines an outdoor art gallery with a natural area that serves as a gateway to Litovelské Pomoraví. Most of the Sluňákov grounds are freely accessible. Art and nature are two distinct aspects of a visit here.

Hundreds of tree species, including Japanese maples, grow across almost three hectares at the Bílá Lhota Arboretum; there are also alpine and aquatic plants. The arboretum offers a botanical counterpoint to the caves and forest paths: instead of underground spaces or a longer route, the focus here is on plant diversity. The iron-rich Těšíkovská kyselka mineral spring is another natural site. Its surroundings serve as a starting point for hiking trails in the foothills of the Nízký Jeseník.

History and Regional Architecture

The district’s history takes many different forms. Bouzov Castle is furnished with paintings, works of art, historic furniture and specially made fittings. On ceremonial occasions, visitors can see two working drawbridges and a portcullis; these demonstrations take place only on such occasions. In Křelov, Fort XVII explores the history of Olomouc’s fortifications. A permanent exhibition on the history of the fortress and a military collection are part of the visit.

The Hanácké Museum in Příkazy preserves a well-maintained complex of traditional Haná clay buildings with orchards, three traditional barns and a replica. Here, regional architecture can be seen in a specific group of buildings, while Fort XVII focuses on fortifications and military history. The Svatokopecké Museum offers another way to explore the past, with an exhibition on the history and present-day life of the pilgrimage site of Svatý Kopeček.

Active Experiences and Seasonal Activities

For a more active visit, Park sportu Hrubá Voda offers a wide range of activities, including a bobsleigh track, a treetop walk, horseback riding, disc golf, mini golf and archery. A special addition is an underground labyrinth in a former slate mine. Fun park Hlubočky offers a 1,536-metre-long track, as well as archery and other activities. In winter, there are three ski slopes, a ski school and a sledging and bobsleigh track. As individual facilities and seasonal activities may change, it is a good idea to check the latest information before your trip.

The Veverák rope park at Svatý Kopeček offers another specific option: 47 obstacles are spread across three routes. As the course layout may change, check the latest route information in advance. The Sobáčov sports complex is located on the Litovel–Bouzov cycle route and offers sport fishing, a restaurant, camping cabins, beach volleyball and an outdoor smokehouse. These different offerings cannot be reduced to a single activity; instead, they give you various reasons to shape your stay around your own interests.

Pilgrimage and Olomouc

Svatý Kopeček is a traditional pilgrimage site centred on the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary. Alongside its religious history, the Svatokopecké Museum exhibition also presents the site’s past and present. A seven-kilometre educational trail through the forests of Svatý Kopeček starts near Olomouc Zoo. The zoo itself features extensive marine aquariums with sharks, piranhas and coral fish. From a lookout tower at the zoo, you can see across Olomouc and a large part of Moravia.

Olomouc is a useful point of reference for getting there, as it is an important railway hub; the main station is close to the city centre. Express, InterCity, EuroCity and regional trains stop there. The local transport network is served mainly by trams and buses. As timetables and connections may change, check the latest information before departure. When choosing a hotel, you can consider which of the different sights and stages of your trip matter most to you.
