Church architecture, Haná Baroque and a 42-kilometre circular cycling route give Hnojice a character shaped by local history and outdoor activity. The village in the fertile Haná region combines historical landmarks with an annual festival and a cycling route that passes through the village. This offers several reasons to choose it as a destination: exploring local history, attending the Haná fairs or going for a bike ride.

Village Layout and the Haná Region

Hnojice is a typical village in the fertile Haná region. Its centre has the shape of a closed ellipse, known as an old Slavic circular village. The settlement pattern is therefore also part of the village’s historical character. Road II/447 connects Hnojice with the neighbouring villages of Lužice and Žerotín and provides another point of reference for the village’s location.

Churches, Chapels and Monuments

The present Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built between 1806 and 1812, after the previous church burned down in 1806. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands in the park next to the church. Its signature bears the year 1732; the statue comes from the workshop of Jiří Antonín Heinz, a master craftsman from Uničov. The building’s history and the statue thus point to different historical periods in the village.

At the southeastern edge of the village, the Chapel of Saint Florian stands on a bend in the road to Lužice. It is a work of Haná Baroque dating from 1701. The Hnojice reconciliation cross stands at the crossroads of the roads to Šternberk and Moravská Huzová. It is the only and oldest monument of its kind in the village. The Calvary cross bears a Latin memorial inscription from 1817.

An archaeological find is also part of Hnojice’s history: a Lusatian cremation grave discovered there is classified as a Slavic find from the 6th century.

Haná Fairs and Cycling

The traditional Haná fairs take place every year in August, on the second Saturday and Sunday after the feast of Saint Lawrence. The programme includes entertainment, various exhibitions and performances by groups from the Hagnózek civic association in Hnojice. The exact dates depend on the calendar for each year, and the programme items may also vary from year to year. If you are travelling for the fairs, check the dates for the relevant year in advance.

The “Za krásami přírody” cycling route passes through Hnojice and forms a 42-kilometre circular route starting from Šternberk. It is mostly flat, with only a small elevation difference, and is suitable for all age groups. As surface conditions can change, it is advisable to check the route conditions before setting off. Hnojice is a convenient stop for cyclists travelling from Olomouc or Litovel via Šternberk into the Nízký Jeseník mountains. The circular route from Šternberk and Hnojice’s role as a stop on these journeys answer different planning questions: one gives the distance and starting point, the other the direction of travel.

Plan Your Stay

When planning a stay in a holiday rental, it helps to decide first what brings you to the area. For a trip to the fairs, the dates for the relevant year are the main consideration; for a cycling stay, the key factors are choosing between the circular route and a stop along the way, as well as checking current route conditions.
