Žerotín offers two different ways to explore the area during a stay: What does the village reveal about its architectural history, and which seasonal activities suit your planned travel dates? The castle is historically connected with the Augustinian monastery in Šternberk, but is currently not open to the public. The central chapel offers another local landmark; in summer, swimming is also possible at the multi-purpose water facility, at your own risk.

Castle and chapel: two architectural histories

Žerotín Castle was built in 1751 and served as a summer residence for the Augustinian monastery in Šternberk. This places the building in its historical context; however, the current restriction is what matters for a visit: the castle is currently not open to the public. So do not plan it as a public sightseeing destination. Its construction date and former use may still influence your choice of destination if you are interested in the history of the area.

The Chapel of St Martha is in the centre of the village. It was built in 1882 on the site of an earlier wooden bell tower. Its architectural history can therefore be read as a change at the same location: the chapel replaced the wooden bell tower. The park is also home to a pavilion carved from oak wood, with seating for four and colloquially known as “Koráb”. The chapel and pavilion offer different local points of interest: the chapel is centrally located and connected with its predecessor; the pavilion is distinguished by its oak wood, carving, stated capacity of four people and familiar name.

Summer swimming and Hody sv. Marty

Žerotín’s multi-purpose water facility can be used for swimming during the summer months; swimming is at your own risk. For the 2025 season, the site was open from 1 July to 31 August during operating hours, depending on current weather conditions. These dates apply to the 2025 season, not to a subsequent year. Before travelling at a later date, check the current season information and take the weather dependency into account.

The 2025 municipal newsletter describes the Žerotínské Hody sv. Marty as traditional July festivities in honour of Saint Martha, patron saint of the local chapel. The Saturday programme included the traditional tournament “O PUTOVNÍ ŽEROTÍNSKOU KLOBÁSU”. At the time, the footballers of the local small-sided team had been organising it for more than a quarter of a century. In the Sunday programme described there, the festivities traditionally culminated in a mass in front of the local chapel. The tournament and the mass were different parts of the programme: Saturday was devoted to the sporting competition, while Sunday was devoted to the religious highlight.

This gives you two different things to check when planning your travel dates: for the swimming season, check the operating period and weather; for the Hody, check the specific event dates. You can include the castle’s history in your stay, but not a public visit to the castle. So consider which topic matters to you and check seasonal details for your actual travel dates.
