Discover Litovel through its waterways, squares and collections. The NeÄŤĂz is one of six branches of the Morava River that flow through the town. Along its banks, a distinctive feature of the townscape meets a history that can be read in Litovel’s buildings.
Waterways and Architectural History in Litovel
During the redesign of PĹ™emysl Otakar Square in 2014, a stone bridge over the NeÄŤĂz was uncovered. It is 8.5 metres long and 7 metres wide, and its paving has been preserved. The bridge is thought to date back to around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. The square thus brings together not only the river branch but also an architectural discovery whose date is cautiously estimated.
The town hall also tells the story of several eras. A surviving parchment document mentions it as early as 1287. The building was later remodelled several times, in the Late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. The estimated origins of the bridge and the early mention of the town hall offer different historical perspectives: a probably late medieval bridge on the one hand, and a town hall mentioned as early as the 13th century that combines several styles through later alterations on the other.
Routes Connected with the Town and Its History
The “Historie a pĹ™Ăroda Litovle a okolĂ” educational trail is an easy 3.5-kilometre walking route. All three loops on the trail begin and end within Litovel’s built-up area. For anyone looking for a manageable route connected with the town, it offers both a specific distance and the assurance that the start and finish are within the built-up area.
Another perspective on the past awaits along the “Historická Litovel” circular route. It traces the town’s history from its foundation in the 13th century and leads to architecturally notable buildings in the historic centre. These offer different ways to explore: the educational trail brings history and nature together in its very name, while “Historická Litovel” focuses on the town’s history and architecture.
Brewery Tour and Haná
The Litovel Brewery has grown alongside the Haná region for more than 130 years. A tour introduces visitors to the traditional production of Litovel beers and takes them through the brewhouse and lager cellars, as well as the brewery museum. It concludes with a beer tasting. The tour combines insights into the brewing process with a museum visit and tasting, complementing the town’s architectural and urban history with a look at regional brewing traditions.
Crafts and Music in the Museums
The Litovel Museum is housed in the original building of a 19th-century shooting range. Its permanent exhibition, “Litovelská Ĺ™emesla 1. poloviny 20. stoletĂ” (Litovel Crafts of the First Half of the 20th Century), showcases local crafts from that period. New and interesting objects are continually added, and the exhibition changes over time. Its subject matter thus focuses on craftsmanship during a clearly defined period, while the exhibition itself continues to develop.
A different collection awaits at the Muzeum harmonik, which houses around 330 accordions made by nearly 40 Czech and international manufacturers. Some of the instruments are more than 150 years old. Visitors can also try playing selected accordions or heligons themselves. The collection brings together instruments from manufacturers and periods of different kinds, with the chance to explore some of their sounds firsthand.
These highlights can shape your stay in Litovel in different ways: a route through the built-up area, historic buildings, brewing traditions, or the two museums and their distinct collections. Specific details about routes, buildings and exhibitions can help you explore the town according to your own interests.
