Cholina offers several ways to explore its history: the Parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary brings together building phases from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, while the Hanácké muzeum Cholina displays traditional costumes and examples of household furnishings from past eras. Other highlights include the history of a pilgrimage, a chapel near Svatá voda and a route to Loučka. During your stay, you can focus on church and collection history or also take in the Haná settlement pattern and a hike.

Church and Pilgrimage

The Parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was probably built as early as the 13th century. It was remodeled in the Gothic style in the early 14th century and acquired its present Neo-Gothic appearance in the mid-19th century. The Gothic remodeling and Neo-Gothic appearance are therefore two distinct phases, not two names for the same architectural style. A modern Stations of the Cross by architect Bohumil Teplý is also located on the church’s perimeter wall. It offers a more recent point of reference alongside the older building phases and adds a work of modern design to the perspective on the church.

The town’s religious history also includes the Gothic statue Panna Marie Cholinská, dating from the early 15th century. It helped make Cholina an important pilgrimage site in the first half of the 17th century. The statue and the town’s importance as a pilgrimage site refer to different periods: the artwork dates from earlier than the period when Cholina was considered important. There is also a chapel near Svatá voda, built in 1693.

Haná Culture and Townscape

The Hanácké muzeum Cholina displays traditional costumes and examples of everyday household furnishings from past eras. Its collection began with props used by a local amateur theater group in the 1950s. This origin links the history of the collection to local amateur theater, while the costumes and household furnishings offer a glimpse of clothing and domestic life in earlier times. Unlike the church’s architectural history, the focus here is on the collection and everyday furnishings.

Cholina is considered a typical Haná village with a linear village layout. Buildings are arranged along broad streets or street squares, and the houses face the street with their eaves. The two terms therefore refer to different aspects: “linear village” describes the arrangement along the street space, while “eaves-facing” describes how the houses are oriented toward the street. If you are interested in regional architecture, you can also explore Cholina’s character through its settlement pattern.

Hike to Loučka

The route from Cholina to Loučka is a hiking option in its own right, alongside the town’s cultural and historical attractions. It starts at Cholina railway station, follows the blue hiking trail past the local church building, and runs via Cholinský Dvorek and the Svatá Voda spring to Loučka. The route description was last updated in 2012, so check the current trail markings before setting out. This lets you decide whether to take the route based on its described course and named stops.
