At the foot of the last spur of the Nízký Jeseník, Bukovany combines architectural heritage with two distinct route themes: a pilgrimage educational trail and a cycling route. The village centre is home to original Haná-style farmhouses; above the village stands the Baroque Chapel of St Donatus. These details give the place a clear identity for anyone looking to combine village history with route planning.

Village Character and Regional Setting

Several original Haná-style farmhouses have been preserved in the centre of Bukovany. The original urban layout of the village square is also considered an urban planning asset. Together, the buildings and the square’s layout point to the architectural heritage in the village centre. The T. G. Masaryk Memorial is also part of the local cultural heritage.

Bukovany is part of the RC4 Olomoucko – východ recreational area. This regional designation adds context to the village; the preserved houses, village square and memorial, by contrast, provide specific points of reference for local history.

Churches and the Chapel of St Donatus

Bukovany was first mentioned in 1131. At that time, Bishop Jindřich Zdík consecrated a new Church of St Wenceslas. This is distinct from the Church of St Anthony of Padua, which was built in Bukovany in 1992. The two churches thus represent different periods in the village’s history.

The Baroque Chapel of St Donatus was built in 1774 and stands above Bukovany. It is listed as an immovable cultural monument in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. Its location is on an old route to the pilgrimage church on Svatý Kopeček near Olomouc. The chapel is therefore both a historic building in its own right and connected to a historic pilgrimage route. Compared with the two churches in the village, the chapel dates to a period between the 1131 consecration and the construction of the Church of St Anthony of Padua in 1992.

Pilgrimage Educational Trail and Cycling Route

Bukovany is the second stop on the pilgrimage-themed Svatý Kopeček–Svatý Hostýn educational trail. The route is just under 50 kilometres long and has 19 information boards, including one in Bukovany. This stop places the village on a longer route linking the two pilgrimage sites mentioned.

Another route option is the “Svatý Kopeček – Basilica and Zoo” cycling route, which passes through Bukovany. The 2025 cycling guide rates it as moderate. The options therefore differ in their focus: the boards are part of the pilgrimage educational trail, while the cycling route provides a separate option for trip planning, rated as moderate.
