Moravský Beroun offers several specific themes for a cultural trip: churches from different periods of construction, a permanent exhibition on the town’s history, and Křížový vrch with its park, castle ruins, and pilgrimage chapel. An educational trail adds nature, architecture, and views of the surrounding area to the picture. The attractions range from historic buildings and local history to a circular route featuring nature and cultural themes.

Churches and Town History

The tourist information centre in Moravský Beroun houses the permanent exhibition “Historie Moravského Berouna,” installed since 1 June 2021. Check visiting arrangements before your trip. The parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built between 1606 and 1610 in the Renaissance style and remodelled in the late 1840s in the Late Empire style. The remodelling took place more than two centuries after the church was built, giving this church two clearly distinct construction phases. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross dates from 1754; its present form is based on the plans of master builder Mikuláš Thalherr of Fulnek. It is also used as a venue for exhibitions and concerts. As the programme may change, check the dates if you plan your visit around an event. The churches offer two different ways to read their history: at the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Renaissance building and its later remodelling take centre stage; at the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the year of construction, 1754, and its present form shaped by Thalherr’s plans define its character.

Křížový vrch: Park and History

Křížový vrch is located in Moravský Beroun, in a five-hectare park. Common and rare tree species grow in the park. The remains of Šternberků Castle, dating from 1339, have been preserved on the hill. The cornerstone of the Baroque pilgrimage chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows was laid there on 16 July 1752. The castle ruins and the chapel represent different historical traces on the same hill: a medieval castle and a sacred building from the 18th century.

Educational Trail and Views

The Křížový a Kočičí vrch circular route starts at the bus station in Moravský Beroun and is intended for hiking. As an educational trail, it offers insights into the fauna and flora of the town park and the surrounding countryside. It also provides information about architectural and artistic sights in Moravský Beroun and its surroundings. Natural history and architecture are two distinct themes along the route. The trail also offers views of the peaks of the Hrubý Jeseník range, including Praděd. In an old quarry, there is a covered seating area with a fire pit; five additional covered stops have benches. Check the current condition of the trail and facilities before your visit, especially if you plan to take a break at one of the seating areas. Those who want to notice architecture and art as well as the landscape while hiking will find both among the trail’s themes.
