Měrotín offers a range of points of interest: church and architectural history, a geological destination, and the landscape around Parduska. When planning, it helps to distinguish between these themes. St. Martin’s Church and other monuments offer insights into the town’s history; Geologické varhany is a geotope in a former limestone quarry, while Parduska is associated with scenic views and a marked route.

Churches and monuments

The parish church of St. Martin offers several specific dates that help trace the town’s history. It is first mentioned in the land registers in 1481. Its tower dates from the first half of the 16th century; the nave is decorated with Renaissance ornamentation and portals. In 1619, the landowner at the time had the parish church rebuilt. These dates answer different questions: 1481 is the first recorded mention, the tower’s dating describes one part of the building, and the Renaissance ornamentation and portals characterize the design of the nave. If you are interested in architecture, you can consider the historical chronology and the specific design separately.

The Baroque rectory, dating from 1772, is also one of Měrotín’s architectural monuments. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary was built on the village square in 1843. The wayside shrine on the route to Parduska is considered the oldest monument in the town.

Geology and access planning

Geologické varhany adds a geological perspective. The attraction is considered a geotourism destination and a geotope. The geological formations lie in the former Brodka limestone quarry between Mladeč and Měrotín; the site is in the cadastral area of Měrotín. Geologické varhany is therefore a different focus from the historic buildings: here, the interest lies in geological formations at a former extraction site. The site is considered accessible by car without access restrictions; the access road comes within 250 metres. The former quarry itself is considered closed. Check local access conditions before your visit, and do not confuse reaching the site with entering the quarry.

Parduska, scenic views and protected area

Two different scales are relevant when considering the landscape. From Parduska hill southeast of Měrotín, views extend over the Haná towards the Jeseníky Mountains and over the Bouzovská vrchovina highlands. A local waymark leads from the rest bench and wayside shrine on the route above Měrotín to the summit of Parduska. Before setting out, check whether the waymark can be found on site. The cadastral area of Měrotín is part of the Litovelské Pomoraví Protected Landscape Area. This protected-area designation applies to the cadastral area, while the viewpoint is a destination on a single hill.

A possible event date

One possible date to plan around is the Memoriál Josefa Vitoula. The SDH Měrotín Volunteer Firefighters’ Association traditionally organizes it. If you would like to combine your trip with this event, check the event date before making plans.
