A wooden chapel built in 1708 and the habitat of the large-flowered pasqueflower illustrate two different interests for a stay in Krčmaň: history and nature. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider which of these themes you want your trip to focus on more. The nature-related features include protected plant and vegetation communities; the history spans from the construction of the chapel to the memorial at Borek.
Natural Monuments and Landscape
The U Strejčkova lomu Natural Monument protects the habitat of the large-flowered pasqueflower (Pulsatilla grandis), which is significant at the European level, as well as other xerothermic and subxerothermic grass and herb communities. This protects both the plant species’ habitat and other vegetation communities. Xerothermic describes conditions characterized by warmth and dryness; subxerothermic refers to a less pronounced form of these conditions. These terms help put the ecological focus into context: the natural monument is concerned with both a specific plant species and the grass and herb communities surrounding it.
The Cigánské zmoly Natural Monument lies within the cadastral area of Krčmaň. The U Bílých hlin locality is in the vicinity of Krčmaň, on a gently sloping, southeast-facing hillside. The described natural features therefore differ: at U Strejčkova lomu, the plant species and vegetation community shape the ecological focus, while at U Bílých hlin, it is the slope and its aspect. Cigánské zmoly is identified by its location within the cadastral area of Krčmaň.
Route to U Strejčkova lomu
U Strejčkova lomu can be reached from Grygov railway station by following a green-marked trail along a field track towards Krčmaň. The route description includes both the trail marking and the field track, which you can take into account when planning your journey. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
The History of Kostel sv. Floriána
The history of Kostel sv. Floriána dates back to a wooden chapel built in 1708 and dedicated to Saint Florian. After the original chapel burned down, a new, solidly built chapel was erected in its place in 1744. The chapel underwent extensive repairs in 1851. The three dates represent different construction phases: the dedicated wooden chapel was followed by its masonry replacement, and later by repairs. The change from wood to solid masonry distinguishes the first two phases; 1851 refers to repairs, not to another new building.
A Memorial at Borek
Borek was planted by men from Krčmaň who had returned from the First World War. It was intended to recall the hardships at the front and also to commemorate those who had fallen and did not return. Its origins thus connect the experience of those who came home with the memory of those who had fallen. Unlike the chapel’s history, the focus here is a shared memorial, explicitly associated with the time at the front and those who never returned.
