At the highest point in Hraničné Petrovice, the Church of St. Peter and Paul stands at an elevation of 590 m. It is located on the road between Šternberk and Domašov nad Bystřicí. Its single-nave design, pentagonal presbytery and 40 m-high tower on the west side define its architecture. This distinctive building and its prominent location provide a clear starting point for getting oriented in the village.
Uplands, Meadows and Protected Species
Hraničné Petrovice lies in the Jívovská vrchovina in the southwestern Nízký Jeseník, at an elevation of about 580 m. The hilly landscape is defined by broad, rounded watersheds and deeply cut stream valleys. The village’s approximate elevation and the church’s elevation of 590 m refer to different points.
The municipality lies within the Údolí Bystřice Nature Park. The surrounding area is characterised by agriculture and forestry: it includes mainly coniferous forests, fields, meadows and pastures where cattle are raised extensively. Domašovské louky extends into the municipality. These wet foothill meadows are home to protected and endangered plant species.
Legally protected bird species are also found in the area. These include the black stork, stock dove, Eurasian sparrowhawk, Montagu’s harrier, northern goshawk, raven and Eurasian eagle-owl. Along with the meadows and the landscape shaped by agriculture and forestry, they offer a specific nature-focused theme to consider when planning your trip.
Hiking Trails with Different Routes
A blue-marked hiking trail runs between Domašov nad Bystřicí and Huzová through the centre of Hraničné Petrovice. The green-marked trail, by contrast, runs along the western edge of the village and connects Šternberk with Svatý Kopeček. The routes therefore differ both in their location within the village and in their stated endpoints. When choosing, you can consider whether the village centre or its western edge is the more relevant point of reference for your plans.
Church Architecture and Local History
In church architecture, the presbytery refers to the chancel; here, it is pentagonal. The single-nave floor plan and the tower positioned on the west side give the building a clear architectural structure. For visitors interested in culture, both its location on the road between the two towns and its architectural design are highlights.
The Pietà group, created in 1870 on the old road towards the former village of Hraničné, is also part of the local history. It bears the German devotional inscription “Schmerzens Mutter bitt für uns” (“Mother of Sorrows, pray for us”). The Petrovická alej is more than 250 m long and runs along a field path leading from the village past the Pietà. It was planted on 23 April 2016 exclusively with native and traditional woody plants. The years have different significance here: 1870 marks the creation of the Pietà, while 2016 marks the planting of the avenue.
Practical Tips for Planning
The Turistická základna includes a fenced garden suitable for various sporting activities. If you plan to visit, check how it is currently being used in advance. Do not enter the surrounding private properties.
You can weigh up your interests clearly when deciding on your trip: church architecture and local history on one hand, and marked hiking trails and nature themes centred on uplands, wet meadows and bird species on the other. Hraničné Petrovice offers these different points of interest without requiring them to be combined into a single excursion itinerary.
