The Lidice Rose Garden lies between the original village and the newly established one. It was created in 1955 as a Garden of Peace and Friendship and covers 3.5 hectares. It is home to 240 rose varieties and more than 24,000 rose bushes; the planting is continually renewed. The garden is part of a multifaceted Lidice experience, where remembrance, art and a walk through the present-day village each have their own place.

Lidice: Remembrance, the Present and the Garden

At the Lidice Memorial Museum, you can see a permanent exhibition; there is also a walking route through the dignified grounds of the former village. Free smartphone audio guides are available for independent visits. You can also stroll through present-day Lidice and the rose garden. The Lidice Gallery complements the memorial site with a permanent exhibition of the Lidice modern art collection and changing exhibitions.

In Lidice, different ways of discovering the area come together: the history of the former village, the present-day settlement, the garden and the art. The rose garden connects the old and new villages. Its size and variety of roses give the walk a distinctive setting, while the ongoing renewal of the planting is worth bearing in mind when referring to the plant numbers listed here.

Ancient Traces in Budeč, Třebíz and Buštěhrad

Budeč features preserved fortifications and the foundations of the Church of the Virgin Mary. The Rotunda of St Peter and Paul is also part of the historic character of the site: its nave is considered the oldest standing building in the Czech Republic. From the Budeč viewpoint, the view stretches across Kováry and the valley of the Zákolany stream. Seasonal foliage can restrict visibility.

The ethnographic museum in Třebíz is arranged as an open-air museum based on village buildings and their furnishings. Cífkův statek preserves a specific architectural detail: building elements from the late 16th century have survived there. The two places explore history in different ways—in Budeč, the focus is on fortifications and church foundations, while in Třebíz it is on the buildings and their furnishings.

In Buštěhrad, the Ota Pavel Museum is dedicated to the writer. The exhibition was created in collaboration with family members, friends, local eyewitnesses and people connected with Pavel’s books. The Buštěhrad history trail links historically significant buildings with places associated with Ota Pavel. Those interested in literature will find a distinct way into the history of the town here.

Chateau and Forest in Lány

Since 1921, Lány Chateau has been the official summer residence of the Czech head of state. You can visit the chateau from April to October; check the seasonal visiting conditions before your trip. This period is helpful for planning without assuming that visits are possible outside the stated season.

The nature trail in the Lánská Obora introduces local forest flora and fauna and includes a section for observing wild animals. It is 4.4 kilometres long and has two sections. The demonstration section is open seasonally. If you plan to visit this particular section, check its seasonal access before your visit. This helps distinguish the length of the nature trail from the specific access restriction affecting this section.

Mining History and Routes in Kladno

At the Mayrau Mining Museum, a final day of work is recreated: machinery and equipment are arranged as if the miners had just left the site. The museum is a branch of the Sládeček Museum in Kladno. The mining history nature trail in Kladno offers a different perspective on the mining heritage. Its route follows former mines, an outcrop of the main coal seam and the Žraločí zuby Natural Monument.

Kladno railway station was once an important railway hub for mining and metallurgy. A route from the station follows cycle route 0017, which runs alongside the current railway line. The Kladno area is also home to a 300-metre-long natural pump track on cycle route 0017. It offers easier and more challenging sections. The wider Kladensko-Slánsko area is shaped by its mining history; its character includes both old Přemyslid fortifications and an industrial landscape.

Water, Views and Local Ingredients

Čabárna Water Park is designed in the style of a Japanese garden. Its features include ponds, ornamental ponds with water lilies, aquatic plants, and domestic and free-roaming animals. A path leads around the water. This makes the visit quite different from the historic sites and museums: here, designed water features and plants take centre stage.

Slaný also offers a distinct way to experience regional culture. Pivovar Antoš brewery uses Czech hops from the Žatec area and malt from the Haná region of Moravia. Beer is served directly from the lager cellars. The ingredients point to two different regions of origin, while the serving style makes the cellars part of the brewery experience.
