The castle, church and military-history sites give Smečno several distinct perspectives on its history. Nearby, the Smečenská Gorge natural monument provides a geological contrast. When planning your visit, keep in mind that individual attractions have different visiting conditions.

Castle and heritage zone

Smečno Castle dates back to a 15th-century fortress. Its interior is not open to visitors. The castle park is open to the public, although local conditions may apply; check access before travelling. The park is home to the Sala terrena pavilion, built by K. I. Dientzenhofer in 1730. Since 10 September 1992, the Smečno Urban Heritage Zone has been protected. It comprises the historic town centre and the castle with its adjoining park.

Church of the Holy Trinity

The Church of the Holy Trinity preserves the presbytery of an originally Gothic building dating from the 14th century. The rest was created during a Renaissance reconstruction in 1587. The dates therefore refer to different parts of the church: the Gothic origins apply to the presbytery, while 1587 refers to the rest of the building.

Organ and concert use

The Smečno organ dates from 1587. According to the town’s description, it is considered the oldest organ in Central Europe. In addition to church services, it is used for occasional organ concerts. If you plan to attend a concert, check the latest information before your trip.

Museum and military history

The Sýpka building in western Smečno dates from 1700 and houses the Artillery Museum. The museum can be visited by arrangement with the municipal office. The Vojenský skanzen Smečno holds the Zdeněk Stárek Memorial every September. The programme includes all-day dynamic demonstrations of light and heavy military equipment; check the details of the current edition if you are planning your visit around it.

The Vojenský skanzen Smečno also includes a bunker built against the wall of the castle park. It has been restored to its state at the time of the September 1938 mobilisation. Alongside the town’s older buildings and local history, it offers a tangible connection to the military history of 1938.

Tomb chapel and natural monument

The Clam-Martinic family tomb is an Empire-style tomb chapel built in 1832. It is located in the eastern part of the Smečno cemetery in the Kladno District. The chapel served as the burial place of the noble Clam-Martinic family, which owned Smečno Castle. The history of the burial site is therefore connected to the history of the castle’s ownership.

Nearby, 2 km southwest of the town, lies the Smečenská Gorge natural monument. It is a deeply incised marl canyon. The natural monument protects a geological section of the Džbán Cretaceous Table and calciphilous plant species. For those interested in geology and plant life, it offers a different point of interest from the town’s historic buildings.
