Vraný combines the architectural history of a small town with a landscape shaped by the valley of the Vranský potok. Two branches of the stream flow through the valley; the Obora mixed forest is also nearby. This lets you choose different focuses when planning your visit: the sights in town or the surrounding nature.

Valley and forest around Vraný

The two branches of the Vranský potok are part of the landscape around Vraný. The nearby Obora mixed forest is frequently visited by mushroom pickers. Those interested in nature around the town will find a different point of interest here than in the chapels, statues and historic buildings. Vraný lies outside the network of marked hiking trails. If you are planning a hike, check the current trail markers and take this difference into account when choosing your route.

Castle, churches and historic landmarks

Vraný Castle is a three-winged Rococo residence with a mansard roof. According to a regional tourism website, the Metropolitan Chapter of St. Vitus in Prague had the castle built between 1785 and 1794; another architectural register gives a different construction date, so this dating should be treated with caution. A monument to Svatopluk Čech stands in front of the building. The castle currently houses a social care facility, and access is restricted. If you are planning to visit the interior, check access arrangements in advance.

The churches and chapels also tell the story of different periods of construction. The Baroque Church of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist stands on elevated ground on the western edge of town. The current church building dates from 1751 to 1761; a church on this site has been mentioned since 1352. The Chapel of St. Rosalia was built in 1812 on the site of an older cross. The late Baroque niche chapel of the Holy Trinity was probably built in 1813.

A statue of St. John of Nepomuk, mentioned as early as 1727, stands in Vraný’s square. In front of the rectory is a statue of the Virgin Mary, described as a Baroque sculptural work; a statue of St. Wenceslas stands near the town hall. The Slánská Gate is a surviving eastern gate of the former Vraný gate system. Its Renaissance design was remodelled in the Baroque style, and the gate was reconstructed in 2004. With its stage-set-like appearance and side passage for pedestrians, it is one of the few surviving examples of this type. The Slánská Gate is freely accessible to visitors; confirm access before your visit.

Museum, school and local history

A 2015 municipal description presents the Památník městyse Vraný as a museum with documents and archival materials about Vraný. It also mentions one room each dedicated to the life and work of Svatopluk Čech and Jaroslav Věšín. A municipal document from the same year says that visits for visitors, tourists, and schools and kindergartens from the surrounding area are possible on request and when there is sufficient interest. Check the current opening arrangements in advance.

The local school has an unbroken 350-year educational tradition and is one of Vraný’s notable sights. Together with the museum, it reflects local education and remembrance; the monuments and religious buildings reveal further aspects of the town’s history. Svatopluk Čech features both in the castle’s history and in the dedication of a museum room.
