Libušín brings together the history of its early medieval hillfort, churches, a traditional pilgrimage festival and activities for nature lovers. When planning your trip, it is worth noting the different conditions: some visiting opportunities are limited to a particular day of the month, the natural swimming lake to the summer months, and the festival to its dates for each edition.
Hillfort: Archaeology and Landscape
A settlement stood on the promontory of Libušín in the 6th–7th centuries. Libušín Hillfort covered 12.3 hectares and is one of the largest promontory hillforts in Bohemia. The early medieval hillfort had an acropolis and two outer baileys. Together, these features give an impression of the site’s size and layout. The hillfort is classified as an important archaeological site.
An informative educational trail has been established in the hillfort grounds. It complements the archaeological site with an explanatory perspective. If you are interested in the history of the place, you can explore both its early settlement history and the hillfort’s structures here.
The landscape is also part of Libušín’s character: part of the area lies in Džbán Nature Park, and it is also home to three significant landscape features. Dřín na Hradišti Libušín is a protected heritage tree, first designated on 2 March 2023.
Two Churches, Different Roles
The large neo-Gothic Church of St. Procopius in Libušín was built in 1908, primarily for local schoolchildren. It has a single nave and a 32-metre-high tower. Its architectural features include eleven cathedral-glass windows and five windows with figurative depictions.
The Church of St. George on the hillfort has a different role: since the new Church of St. Procopius was consecrated in 1908, it has served as a pilgrimage and cemetery church. The two churches thus tell different parts of the town’s history. The Church of St. George and the wooden bell tower each open on the last Saturday of the month; check these opening times before your trip.
The pilgrimage to St. George’s is also tied to a fixed point in the calendar. It traditionally takes place on the Sunday around St. George’s Day on 24 April; the exact Sunday varies from year to year.
Plan for Festivals and Outdoor Activities
The historical festival Bitva Libušín was founded in 1991. During the festival, you can visit the historical camp with the whole family. It showcases medieval ways of life and military camp life, the fighters’ equipment and clothing, as well as historical crafts and culture; historical craft products are available to buy. The camp’s specific attractions may vary from one festival edition to the next.
Jezírko Libušín natural swimming lake is open for swimming during the summer months. Check swimming conditions and access before your trip. For cyclists, the Na Závini cycle path in Libušín has been completed and is ready to use; checking local surface conditions before your ride may be worthwhile. The educational trail, cycle path and natural swimming lake offer different ways to enjoy a stay, without requiring a shared itinerary.
Choose Your Accommodation Based on Your Reason for Travelling
When looking for a holiday apartment in Libušín, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your visit: the hillfort and churches offer a cultural and historical experience, while the pilgrimage and festival take place on specific dates, and the natural swimming lake is a summer attraction. This lets you choose when to stay based on your interests, rather than assuming you need a fixed itinerary.
