Castle and Beekeeping History in Koleč

If you base your choice of destination on cultural history, Koleč offers several points of interest: the castle, the beekeeping museum and a local beekeeping tradition dating back to the 19th century. These themes span different periods and give the town a clearly defined cultural profile.

The Muzeum včelařství is located in the west wing of Zámek Koleč. On 31 July 2016, it opened to the public in a reconstructed wing of the castle. Some exhibits may change, so check with the operator before your visit to confirm current access.

The history of beekeeping in Koleč goes back further: in 1879, the Švarc family founded a factory for beehives and beekeeping supplies right in the town. The museum’s public opening in 2016 and the earlier history of manufacturing represent two different milestones in the same local field. Those interested in beekeeping will find both a museum connection and a historic craft tradition here.

Church, Architecture and Music History

The Kostel Nejsvětější Trojice was added to the south wing of Zámek Koleč between 1711 and 1713. Together with the museum in the west wing, it provides two distinct points of interest within the castle: the history of beekeeping and the history of the church. The different wings help place these themes in their architectural context.

A historic music collection is associated with the Kostel Nejsvětější Trojice. About two-thirds of its musical sources are handwritten, dating from the second half of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century. This broad time span and the high proportion of manuscripts offer a distinct perspective on the church’s musical history, in addition to its architectural connection with the castle.

The castle church hosts events including the Medová pouť, concerts and midnight Masses. Dates may vary. If one of these events is important to your trip, check the schedule in advance.

A Closer Look at Týnec u Kolče

In Týnec u Kolče, a Boží muka stands on the right beside the road from Zákolany to Týnec via Mozolín. This three-tiered pillar shrine has shallow niches with images of saints painted on sheet metal. Its distinctive form sets it apart from the castle and church themes in Koleč and makes it a separate art-historical feature.

The Boží muka was restored as a cultural monument in 2009 at a cost of 254,000 Kč. The year refers to the restoration, not to when the shrine was built. Its specific architectural form and subsequent restoration history are both relevant to understanding it.

Practical Information Before Your Visit

Koleč railway station is no more than a five-minute walk from Zámek Koleč; this time estimate is approximate. Another practical note concerns the area around Studánka Svatého Václava: a field report from April 2019 describes it as heavily waterlogged and says wellington boots are needed to reach it. Check the conditions locally before planning your visit.
