The yellow-marked hiking trail runs through Libovice to the U Jána trail junction. Together with the historic sites and landscape features, it gives a clear picture of the place: Libovice has traditionally been shaped by agriculture and forestry and lies on the edge of Džbán Nature Park. This means that both hikes and local history can feature in your travel plans.
Hiking and landscape
The yellow-marked trail runs through Libovice and continues to U Jána. Another reason to go hiking is the traditional New Year’s hike that the municipality regularly organizes to Dívčí skála. The name refers to the remains of a sandstone rock, located roughly halfway between Sv. Jana and Kvílice. The trail junction and the rock are therefore different landmarks: U Jána is the destination of the yellow-marked route, while Dívčí skála is the destination of the New Year’s hike.
Zelený vrch is also part of the surrounding landscape: it is the highest point in Kejkol Forest. Jedlý Park offers a different focus. The 1.69-hectare park includes play and educational features, a workout area, and amenities for relaxation and rest. Local highlights thus include both forest and hiking trails and a landscaped open space with a variety of features.
Local history along the trail
One stop on the Libovická Trail is titled “Těžba uhlí v Libovici” and covers coal mining in Libovice. A coal-related discovery is also recorded at Necky: while deepening a well there, residents came across coal at a depth of about eleven metres.
At the Osada Necky stop, oral tradition and surviving traces come together. According to local tradition, a settlement called Necky stood there before the Thirty Years’ War. Two cellars and slight traces of foundations remain from the former settlement. There are also traces of the three former pond dams, with their culverts, at the spring near Necky. The area’s history therefore includes both stories of earlier settlement and physical and landscape remains.
The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk and the Red Cross above Libovice provide further historical points of interest. The chapel was built in 1837. The Red Cross commemorates a Russian general who was seriously wounded and died there during the Napoleonic Wars. The two landmarks differ in character: the chapel is a structure with a known year of construction, while the cross recalls a specific historical event.
Beyerovka Chateau is another historical point of interest. It was completed in 1867 in the romantic Tudor Gothic style. In 1964, the municipality received permission to demolish it; afterward, only a pile of stones remained. Its completion and the later demolition permit mark different stages in its history.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Libovice, these different highlights can help guide your travel plans: hiking trails and scenery sit alongside the park and local history. You can first decide which topics matter most to your stay, without committing to a fixed daily schedule or a particular length of stay.
