Pozdeň offers several distinct reasons to visit: the architectural history of its church, monuments in the village, two recurring events and a 45-kilometre cycling route. When planning, it helps to keep these themes separate: festivals take place on fixed dates, while the cycling route requires its own block of time. You can then plan your stay and accommodation around whether a cultural event or the cycling tour is your main focus.
Church and Monuments in Pozdeň
Jaroslav Plichta of Žerotín had the Church of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist built in 1289. Between 1847 and 1858, Václav Štraybl of Vrané remodelled it in the Baroque style to give it its present appearance. Its furnishings include the marble high altar, donated to the church by Canon Jan Bernard in 1879. The building’s history therefore spans several dates: its construction, the later remodelling and the donation of the altar.
Near the village centre stands a Baroque sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1746. It was restored in 1996. The war memorial stands beside the bus stop at the municipal office. It commemorates the soldiers who fell in the First World War from 1914 to 1918, as well as the victims of the German occupation from 1939 to 1945. The memorial was renovated and given a new enclosure between 2022 and 2024. The statue and the memorial connect specific places in the municipality with different chapters of local history and remembrance.
Festivals on Different Dates
Every May, the local youth organise Staročeské máje. The festivities include a procession of young people in traditional costumes accompanied by musicians, as well as a citizens’ procession that also draws visitors from surrounding municipalities and towns. If you want to plan your stay around this festival, its annual date in May can help you choose when to visit.
Another recurring event is Šibřinky. The local SK Slavoj Pozdeň organises it on the second Saturday of March each year. The two events therefore take place in different months: Šibřinky offers an occasion to visit in March, while Staročeské máje takes place in May. If you want to plan your trip around one of these festivals, this difference in the calendar can help you choose the dates.
Landscape, Cycling Route and Getting There
Pozdeň is one of the municipalities marking the boundary of Džbán Nature Park. The nature park was designated in 1994 because of its exceptional, well-preserved landscape character. Its location on the boundary adds a landscape dimension to the village’s historical attractions without conflating the two.
The official cycling route 12–Peruc is 45 kilometres long, starts and ends in Pozdeň, and runs along roads and forest tracks. As a circular route, it makes Pozdeň both the starting and finishing point. The route’s length and course give the cycling tour its own place in your day’s plans. Check the current route and trail conditions before setting out.
Bus route 588 connects Slaný, Srbeč and Milý, and serves Pozdeň on weekdays. If you plan to use this service for your trip, check the current timetable in advance.
