An oval chapel in the castle wing and educational trails about the history of steel and coal mark two very different sides of Kladno. There are also churches and museum collections covering topics from regional history to metallurgy. When choosing what to visit, you can distinguish between architectural history, collection highlights and industrial history on site.

Castle, Chapel and Churches

Kladenský zámek was extensively rebuilt from 1737 to 1740 on the site of a medieval fortress, based on a design by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. The rebuilding was carried out for the Břevnov Benedictine Monastery. The Chapel of Saint Lawrence was completed in 1740; it is oval in shape, has a domed vault and is built into a square wing of the castle. It is considered the most historically valuable part of Kladenský zámek. Its oval shape, domed vault and integration into the wing give the chapel a distinctive architectural profile.

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Kladno has been protected as a cultural monument since April 5, 2022. The two-aisled, non-oriented building has a striking, dominant tower dating from 1912–1913. Its design combines historicist styles, Art Nouveau and modernism. A service is held at 8:30 a.m. on Sundays at the Church of Saint Wenceslas in Kladno-Rozdělov. If you plan to attend, check with the parish in advance.

Museums and Their Collections

Sládečkovo vlastivědné muzeum specializes in regional history, ethnography and the natural environment of the Kladno area. It has a special collection on mining and metallurgy. Other collections cover geology, archaeology and numismatics, as well as historical furniture, guild objects and commemorative documents. The collections also include material related to the demolished Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The topics thus range from nature and archaeology to mining, crafts and local memory.

Muzeum věžáků Kladno is open to the public on Saturdays throughout the year. The 90-minute guided tours start at set times and must be booked in advance. The tour includes the entrance hall, an exhibition and a model apartment, as well as a view from the roof terrace and a visit to civil defense bunkers. The fixed duration and advance booking are important points to consider when planning your day. Check the latest opening and program information in advance, as visitor arrangements may change.

Educational Trails on Industrial History

The Vojtěšská hutí educational trail runs through the site of the former Koněv ironworks in Kladno. It presents the history of the works and the main operational areas involved in steel production. The trail is about 2.5 km long and has five stops; its length and number of stops may change if it is revised. Signposting may also change.

The educational trail Po lesních cestách do historie dolování uhlí na Kladensku focuses on a different topic: the history of coal mining in the Kladno hard coal basin. It starts in Kladno-Vrapice at the Church of Saint Nicholas and ends in Cvrčovice–Čabárna. Along the way, it passes the remains of individual mines and the outcrop of the main Kladno coal seam, then continues to the Žraločí zuby natural monument. The endpoints and signposting may change; check the route information before setting out. The two educational trails thus differ mainly in their subject matter: ironworks and steel production on one, coal mining and its traces on the other.

Leisure and Getting Around Locally

Sletiště has specialized sports facilities and a large playground. The illuminated inline skating track is a 560 m asphalt loop, open to the public year-round and available without a reservation. From November to March, use is at your own risk because of possible icing. As availability and access conditions may change, check the latest information before your visit.

From Kladno město railway station, you can walk to Aquapark Kladno along local streets in about ten minutes. The Kladno stop on line 605, named “Aquapark,” is opposite the main entrance to Sletiště and just a few steps from the entrance to Aquapark Kladno. This gives you both a walking route from the station and the location of a specific bus stop; check the latest service information before travelling.
