A modern stone circle, a pond and recurring events give Zichovec several distinct ways to explore. The Zichovecký cromlech connects the village with the question of prehistoric structures; at Zichovecký rybník, birdwatching and fishing take centre stage. Zichovec is also located on the edge of Džbán Nature Park. These themes are easy to distinguish when planning your trip: local history, nature observation and events with their own seasonal focus.

Cromlech and local history

The ZichoveckĂ˝ cromlech, also called KamennĂ˝ kruh v Zichovci, was built in May 2010 on the edge of Zichovec, above the pond. It is a modern replica of prehistoric stone circles, created as an experimental contribution to research into the purpose of Celtic and pre-Celtic structures. Its alternative name refers directly to the stone circle. The distinction is important for context: the structure is contemporary, while the research question concerns the function of its older models.

Two dates mark different milestones in the village’s history. The earliest surviving written reference to Zichovec dates from 1407. On 18 December 1924, Zichovec became an independent municipality. The year 1407 therefore marks the oldest surviving written reference, while 1924 marks its status as an independent municipality. The dates complement each other rather than describing the same historical event.

Pond, nature and fishing

The boundary of Džbán Nature Park provides a regional point of reference; Zichovecký rybník is a specific landmark on the southeastern edge of the village. Kingfishers are regularly spotted there. The pond thus brings together two distinct visitor interests: watching wildlife by the water and sport fishing. The latter is usually practised on a “catch and release” basis. If you would like to take part, check the local fishing rules and arrangements beforehand.

One special fishing event is the traditional Zichovecká 24, a 24-hour carp fishing competition at the pond. Teams of two, consisting of a local angler and a guest, compete. The competition is clearly distinguished from regular sport fishing by its fixed duration and team format.

Events throughout the year

Pálení čarodějnic takes place every spring. Hvězdný Zichovec is a traditional public autumn event in Zichovec, featuring observations of the Moon and several deep-space objects. The events differ not only in season but also in theme: the spring tradition is a seasonal occasion, while the autumn event focuses on observing celestial objects. If you would like to plan your visit around one of the events, check the exact dates in advance.

Location and getting there

The locations also make sense when considered together: the pond lies on the southeastern edge of the village, and the cromlech is on the edge above the pond. Pálení čarodějnic takes place on the bank beside the cromlech. The spring tradition is therefore connected geographically with both named landmarks.

To reach Zichovec, take the expressway from Prague towards Chomutov and use the Hořešovice or Panenský Týnec exits. Check road conditions before setting out.
