The Baroque castle, Neoclassical chapel and restored castle park give Buštěhrad a distinctive cultural and historical character. The town also has historic trails, a Functionalist water tower and traces of its local brewing history. You can explore the town from different perspectives: architecture and cultural heritage, town history along a trail, or the surrounding landscape and cycling.

Castle and Park as Cultural Heritage

Buštěhrad Castle is a Baroque castle with a Neoclassical chapel and is considered the town’s most significant monument. The different style classifications also make the building interesting from an architectural perspective: the castle and chapel are each associated with a distinct style. The restored castle park has been open to visitors since 2012. The castle and its park thus offer two distinct aspects of the town’s cultural heritage. If you choose Buštěhrad mainly for its architectural and cultural history, these features provide a concrete starting point.

Town History Along a Trail, Landscape by Bike

The “Buštěhrad History Trail” is an educational tourist trail that takes visitors to places of historical interest in Buštěhrad. The trail uses 26 publicly accessible ceramic frames on houses to tell the history of Starý Hrad and its surroundings. This spreads the historical experience across several frames in the town, rather than limiting it to a description of a single building. This distinction can help you choose what to focus on: here, the emphasis is on historic places and how their stories are presented.

Buštěhrad and its surroundings also offer suitable conditions for cycling. The area also has interesting terrain and unusual views of the landscape, especially towards České Středohoří. While the Buštěhrad History Trail leads to historic places in the town, cycling also takes in the terrain and landscape of the surrounding area. Local conditions may change, so check conditions in the area before setting off on a bike ride.

Architectural Monuments and Traces of History

Dating from 1933, the Buštěhrad water tower is a technically significant building of architectural value in the Functionalist style. Alongside the Baroque castle and its Neoclassical chapel, it offers a different architectural point of interest. These different classifications can help you distinguish between various building styles as you explore the town’s history.

The first and therefore oldest written record of the Buštěhrad brewery dates from 1548. The protected former brewery administration building, house no. 111, has a typologically interesting and rare roof structure of the “skružový krov” type. The church in Buštěhrad was consecrated on 27 February 1898. These details offer different ways to explore the town’s history: through an early written record, a distinctive technical architectural feature and the consecration date of a church.

Ota Pavel and the History of Buštěhrad

The Popper House, no. 54, is one of the 34 stops on the Ota Pavel Trail in Buštěhrad. The two numbers refer to different details: no. 54 is the house number, while 34 is the number of stops on the trail.

One section of the Buštěhrad Ota Pavel Museum exhibition was dedicated to the life and work of Ota Pavel. It included documents, photographs and objects from his life, including his typewriter, fishing rods and a teddy bear from his childhood. A second section was dedicated to the history of Buštěhrad and the life of František Rott, one of the founders of the local Sokol association. The two sections had different focuses: Ota Pavel’s life and work, and the town’s history with František Rott.
