The Baroque Lány Castle gives the town a clear historical connection: since 1921, it has served as a temporary and summer residence for the presidents of the Czech Republic. Other attractions include the T. G. Masaryk Museum, an exhibition on Jože Plečnik, and subjects ranging from Czech ice hockey to forests and wildlife.
Lány Castle and Masaryk’s Story
On guided tours, you can see the castle’s formal first floor. The commentary focuses on T. G. Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia. Tours take place daily except Fridays; seasonal visiting arrangements may change. Check the latest visitor information before setting out.
The castle park also has seasonal opening hours: it is open to the public from Easter to the end of October. Since access may vary, it is worth checking again before your planned visit. A castle tour and a visit to the park offer different experiences: the interiors and Masaryk’s story on the one hand, the park on the other.
Since 2003, the T. G. Masaryk Museum has been housed in a Baroque Fürstenberg granary that has undergone careful architectural renovation. The museum includes a research room, a lecture hall and a small café. The historic building and its redesigned architecture are therefore part of the visit, alongside the museum’s facilities.
A panel exhibition is dedicated to Jože Plečnik, T. G. Masaryk’s court architect. Through his exceptional architectural interventions, Plečnik remains closely associated with the castle park in Lány. The architectural story of Plečnik thus complements Masaryk’s political history.
Forest, Ice Hockey and More
The Lánská Game Reserve quest trail offers a different focus: the doe Eliška guides children along the journey of wood, from seed to mature tree to wood product. Get started with a mobile phone: find the first QR code and scan it. The trail turns the subject of wood into a hands-on discovery activity for children.
The demonstration area of the Lánská Game Reserve educational trail has a wooden lookout point overlooking a large-game enclosure. The quest trail and the lookout point appeal to different interests: the trail focuses on wood and its processing, while the lookout offers a view of the game enclosure. Seasonal access may vary; check the latest visitor information before planning this part of your stay.
The Hokejová síň českého hokeje (Czech Hockey Hall) features a permanent exhibition on legends of Czech and Czechoslovak ice hockey, as well as hockey trophies. If you are interested in this subject, it offers a different focus from the castle and museum history; visitor details may change. The Museum of Sports Cars opened in 1997. If you plan to visit, check the latest visitor arrangements beforehand, as the opening year does not indicate current access.
