Chržín can be viewed on two scales: the village’s history stretches far back, while notable architectural and landscape landmarks are centered around the Church of St. Clement. There are also trails that explore the area from different perspectives. During your stay, you can give different weight to cultural history, archaeological traces and outdoor activities, rather than trying to fit everything into a set itinerary.

Village History and Early Settlement

The first written mention of Chržín dates to 1292. Settlement in the surrounding area is documented from the Neolithic period, approximately from the 5th to 6th millennium BC. The village therefore appears in the written record from 1292, while settlement in the wider area dates back considerably further. For trip planning, this long historical background connects with the church’s specific building phases.

The Church of St. Clement and Its Surroundings

The Church of St. Clement stands on a hill north of Chržín. Its position on the slope offers a picturesque view of the church and the village below from a distance. Architecturally, the church brings together several periods. It was probably originally built in the Early Gothic style, then rebuilt and altered in the Baroque style in 1691 and 1761. The church received its tower in 1781 and was regothicized in 1879. The walls feature Romanesque murals on the theme of the legend of St. Clement; alongside its changing architecture, they provide a distinct art-historical point of interest. The church is surrounded by a cemetery. The grave of Antonín Strnad, a former rector of Charles University and a renowned astronomer, is located there.

Archaeological excavations south of the church have confirmed a field of barrow burials. A possible Celtic hillfort is also believed to have stood on the plateau above Chržín, known as “Za kostelem.” Thus, a confirmed burial field and an archaeological interpretation explicitly presented as a possibility represent two different connections to the area’s early history. Chržín is also nicknamed “český Betlém” (“Czech Bethlehem”), a distinctive local description in its Czech form.

Village Landscape and Trails

The Chržinský Pond lies almost in the center of the village. A forest now occupies the reclaimed site of a former sand pit. These two landscape features offer different points of interest: the pond is close to the village center, while the forest reflects the current use of a former sand pit. Together with the hillside setting and the view of the church and village, they provide several local landmarks that shape Chržín beyond its architectural history.

There are several differently designated trails for exploring the area. A green-marked hiking trail runs from Velvary railway station to Nové Ouholice through Chržín. The Dvořák Trail is a cycling and hiking route in the Chržín area. Another cycling option is the “Okružní cesta z Kralup za slanou i sladkou chutí” loop, which passes through Chržín and continues toward Nová Ves, Staré Ouholice and Miřejovice. You can choose according to the activity you have in mind: hiking, a route for cyclists and hikers, or a cycling loop with a specified continuation. The church, the archaeological sites and the trails each offer a different focus for exploring the village.
