A castle, watermill, Baroque bridge and unusual fortification structure give Sazená a distinctive cultural and historical character. Sazená Airfield adds two specific flying experiences to these attractions. The selection thus ranges from historic architectural styles to aviation.
Castle, Mill and Bridge
Sazená Castle was built around 1606 and remodelled several times later. The entrance and a balcony with stone balusters have survived from its Baroque appearance. Its history therefore encompasses its early construction, later alterations and preserved Baroque details.
The watermill is a longitudinal building with a mansard roof and richly articulated façades. The protected complex also includes a barn and a walled plot with a gate. The complex thus comprises both the mill building and other features of the property.
In the centre of the village, a four-arched stone Baroque bridge crosses the Červený stream, also known as the Bakovský. Casts of the sculpture of Saint John of Nepomuk and the Calvary group stand on the bridge. The originals are in the vestibule of the museum in Velvary. The bridge thus combines distinctive architectural features—four arches, stone and the Baroque period—with two works of art whose originals are housed elsewhere.
Fortification Structure and Airfield
The Sazená Fortress Museum includes an atypical two-embrasure fortification structure designated LO vz. 37 (A-1/24a/Z1). It was built onto a public weighing station. The structure is in the centre of Sazená, northeast of Velvary. It and its surroundings have been restored to their original appearance from late September 1938. The fortification structure therefore represents a different historical focus from the castle, mill and bridge: here, the focus is on a specific type of fortification and its appearance at the time.
At Sazená Airfield, participants in the “Pilotem na zkoušku” experience can try flying an aeroplane or helicopter themselves under the guidance of a flight instructor. The experience includes a pre-flight briefing and a flight. Sightseeing flights by aeroplane are also available. Their route passes over Mělník Castle, Kokořín Castle and Liběchov Chateau, before returning to Sazená. The two offers are therefore quite different: one focuses on trying your hand at flying under instruction, while the other follows a set sightseeing route. Check the availability of the flying experiences again before your trip.
Planning Your Trip
The airfield can be reached from the D8 motorway via Exit 18 and Nová Ves on Road 608. Check road conditions and signs before setting off. When looking for a holiday apartment in Sazená, you can first consider whether architectural history or a flying experience will be the main focus of your stay. For the flying experiences, you can also choose between flying an aircraft yourself under instruction and taking the sightseeing flight route.
