Anyone looking for a hotel in Slaný can plan their stay around specific cultural and landscape themes: city history and sacred sites sit alongside a nature trail through the Slánská hora Natural Monument. The regional museum, a surviving city gate, and the churches offer distinct cultural highlights; astronomy adds a subject of its own.
City Heritage and History
The historic center of Slaný has been an urban conservation area since 1992. The regional museum offers a closer look at the history of the city and its surroundings, with permanent exhibitions on both subjects. This makes it possible to understand the town not only through individual buildings, but also through its regional and urban history.
A tangible remnant of the former town fortifications is the Velvarská Gate, the only surviving gate in Slaný’s fortifications. The structure was built in the pre-Hussite period, from the end of the 13th century to the beginning of the 15th century. An exhibition about the town fortifications opened at the Velvarská Gate in 2021. The gate and the exhibition therefore draw attention to two aspects of the same historical heritage: the surviving building and the fortifications it belonged to.
Churches and Visits
The church of the Discalced Carmelite monastery offers guided tours in cooperation with the Slaný Information Center. Private visits can be arranged for groups. If you are traveling as a group, arrange your preferred visit in advance; logistical details may change.
Another sacred site is the Church of St. Gothard, an important Gothic monument. Since September 2021, volunteers from Farní charita Slaný, together with the Roman Catholic parish of Slaný, have ensured that it remains open to the public for personal prayer and visits. The two churches therefore have different visiting arrangements: guided tours are offered at the Carmelite church and group visits are arranged individually, while St. Gothard is open to the public for prayer and visits.
Nature Trail and Slánská hora Natural Monument
The Slánská hora nature trail runs through the natural monument and its protected area. Its second viewpoint offers a view of Slaný’s historic center. The trail thus connects the protected landscape with a view of the town’s historic urban area. The route described in 2025 starts on Chadalíkova Street and passes a tunnel and a cave.
Slánská hora has been protected as a natural monument since February 1, 1998. The aim is to preserve a geological feature on one of the southernmost outliers of volcanic activity in the České středohoří Mountains. Its characteristic features include columnar jointing and numerous fissure caves. Columnar jointing is the column-like structure of the rock; together with the caves, it forms the geological focus of the natural monument.
Astronomy and Getting There
Astronomy is also one of Slaný’s themes: the Jaroslav Trnka Observatory focuses primarily on popularizing astronomy. This adds a distinct scientific highlight alongside city history, religious heritage, and geology.
In the 2026 season, the Cyklohráček excursion train runs on its current route from Praha-Bubny station to Slaný. Check before traveling whether the service runs on your chosen day. This makes the seasonal train a specific point to consider when planning, without implying a particular timetable or a daily service.
