Podlešín has several distinct local highlights: the column-shaped Podlešín Rock Spire, the protected Podlešín Lime Tree, the Podlešín Viaduct and a cycle path along an old railway embankment. If you are considering Podlešín as a place to stay, you can make your choice based on these themes: geology, railway history or cycling. When planning, the weather-dependent access to the rock spire and finding your way along the cycle-path sections are particularly relevant.

The Podlešín Rock Spire

The Podlešín Rock Spire is an isolated, distinctly column-shaped rock outcrop made of arkosic sandstones to conglomerates of the Slaný Formation. It is about eight metres high. “Isolated” describes it as a single rock outcrop, while “column-shaped” describes its form; together, these features give the geological description a concrete shape. You can reach the rock spire via field paths from Podlešín or Želenice. After rain, these access paths can be very muddy. Take this weather condition into account when planning your visit.

The viaduct and traces of railway construction

The Podlešín Viaduct stands at the entrance to Podlešín from the direction of Knovíz towards Zvoleněves. Along the path to the rock spire, you can see sealed sandstone tunnels from which sandstone was extracted for the construction of the viaduct. The tunnels and the viaduct thus point to two aspects of local railway construction: the extraction of materials and the structure itself.

Cycling along the old railway embankment

The first stage of the local cycle path in Podlešín was built on an old railway embankment towards Zvoleněves. You can cycle along the entire length of this embankment, from Podlešín to below the viaduct. The completed section starts at the wastewater treatment plant and connects to the cycle path to Zvoleněves. For route planning, two details should be distinguished: the old railway embankment describes the route through Podlešín that can be cycled; the completed section starts at the wastewater treatment plant. The local description therefore provides both a route through Podlešín and a specific starting point for the completed section.

The Podlešín Lime Tree

The Podlešín Lime Tree is a small-leaved lime. It was declared a commemorative tree on 25 July 1978 and remains registered as a protected tree. Its trunk circumference was recorded as 420 centimetres on 9 September 2020. The two dates have different roles: 1978 marks its designation as a commemorative tree, while 2020 is the date the circumference was measured. The size given is therefore tied to that measurement date.

Rail travel and practical information

At Podlešín station, passengers are not checked in at the station; check-in takes place on the train. As this arrangement may change, check it again before travelling.

If you are choosing between visiting the rock spire and setting out for a bike ride, different conditions are important: the field paths to the rock spire can be very muddy after rain; for the cycle path, the railway embankment, wastewater treatment plant and direction of the connection to Zvoleněves serve as landmarks.
