Water, Rock and Hiking Trails
At Pedernales Falls, the Pedernales River tumbles over ledges of layered limestone. At Pedernales Falls State Park, you can camp, hike, mountain bike, watch birds or go horseback riding. Check the park information before your visit.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park is home to the country's second-largest canyon. You can explore it on foot, by mountain bike, on horseback or by car. In summer, the TEXAS Outdoor Musical takes place there at the Pioneer Amphitheater from Tuesday to Sunday. If you want to plan your visit around it, check the current season's schedule.
At Big Thicket National Preserve, the Piney Woods meet the coastal prairie. The preserve has more than 30 miles of hiking trails; after heavy rain, check trail conditions. Guadalupe Peak offers a different scale: at 8,751 feet above sea level, it is the highest natural point in Texas. The well-maintained Guadalupe Peak Trail climbs 3,000 feet and makes for a challenging day hike. Preparation is important for this strenuous hike.
Hiking, cycling and rock climbing are among the activities offered at Franklin Mountains State Park. Texas offers both trails for hiking and other ways to spend time in nature.
Cultural Heritage and Exploration
The San Antonio Missions are the first and only World Heritage Site in Texas. The paved Mission Reach Hike and Bike Trail connects the mission sites. Here, you can combine a cultural heritage visit with a trail linking the individual missions.
Caddo Mounds centers on a prehistoric village and ceremonial center. Visitors can walk 0.4 miles of the Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail and see a section of the original road. The short stated trail distance and visible stretch of road make this site especially interesting if you are interested in early history and historic routes.
Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site also brings history to life through on-site visits: guided and self-guided tours allow visitors to see rock art. As of August 31, 2026, permits for self-guided access to North Mountain are issued to 70 people per day. Check the current access requirements before your visit.
Texas Cuisine and Trip Planning
The culinary traditions also have historical roots. Tex-Mex was originally created by Tejanos when Texas was part of Mexico. Chili was declared the official state dish of Texas in 1977. Beef is typical of traditional Texas barbecue. Along the Gulf Coast, seafood markets offer freshly caught seafood from Gulf waters. These examples show different facets of Texas food culture without reducing it to a single specialty.
For overnight stays, almost all Texas State Parks have camping and lodging options. Check the conditions at the relevant park before including this option in your plans. When choosing a destination, you can first consider whether you would rather explore hiking trails, landscapes, historic sites or culinary themes; the experiences described offer different points of focus.
