A depot that had already been slated for demolition was purchased by county residents and moved to a new location. The Sublette Santa Fe Depot and its loading platform were relocated to the edge of town, north of the fairgrounds. Today, the restored depot houses the Haskell County Historical Society Museum. Memorabilia, artifacts and other objects there tell the story of the county. The railroad also has a place in this history: according to the earliest records, C. A. Woodson was appointed railroad agent at the depot in 1916.

Museums and Historic Buildings

In Haskell, the Fort Sam Museum displays military artifacts from the Civil War, as well as from World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War and the Korean War. The selection on display may change in the future. The Johnson House offers a different view of local history: it was built in Santa Fe and moved to Sublette in 1913. It was once owned and cared for by two prominent ranchers from early Haskell County.

The Independence School House can also be understood through specific details. The District #40 wood-frame school building measures 16 Ă— 32 feet; all eight grades were taught there. Together with the depot and the Johnson House, it shows the variety of historic buildings and their stories.

The Rolling Plains and Regional Orientation

Haskell County lies in the Rolling Plains of northwest Texas. The county covers 901 square miles of rolling plains, cut and drained by tributaries of the upper Brazos River. This describes a landscape on a larger scale, not just a single viewpoint. U.S. Highways 277 and 380, State Highways 6 and 283, and numerous Farm-to-Market roads run through the county.

Fishing Waters

The locations mentioned offer anglers different options. Haskell City Park, at Avenue D and South 4th Street, is designated as a Community Fishing Lake. In 2026, 294 adult rainbow trout were stocked there. At Haskell County’s Silo Scott Memorial Park, Anchor Marina offers a boat ramp and access to bank fishing.

Lake Stamford is a 5,124-acre reservoir on Paint Creek, a tributary of the Clear Fork of the Brazos River, ten miles east of Stamford. The lake has fish habitat structures that anglers can locate using GPS and a fish finder. The options range from designated community fishing and bank access to structures that can be searched for on the water with technical equipment.

Ranching Heritage and Local Events

The area’s history extends beyond individual buildings. An expedition led by Capt. Randolph B. Marcy crossed the Haskell County area along Paint Creek in 1849. The 1898 Texas Cowboys’ Reunion was a significant event in local history and represents the preservation of Texas’s ranching heritage.

The Frontier Days Celebration and Rodeo takes place in Haskell in May. If you plan to attend, check the dates for the relevant year. The city of Haskell also operates the Haskell County Railroad Museum. If you’re planning a visit, it’s worth checking the opening hours in advance.
