The Chaparral Wildlife Management Area covers 15,200 acres of brushland in South Texas. The area is located in La Salle and Dimmit counties. This landscape is one side of Dimmit County; architectural history, cultural heritage and historic routes reveal other facets of the destination.

Brushland and a seasonal setting

General public use of the Chaparral Wildlife Management Area is permitted continuously each spring and summer, from April 1 through August 31. The Arena Rojo Nature Trail is located at the area's headquarters: it is half a mile long and wheelchair accessible. Check the current conditions, restrictions and access information with TPWD before your visit.

The vast brushland and the named nature trail bring together two different scales: an area of 15,200 acres and a specific, half-mile-long path. If you would like to include nature in your travel plans, these details offer a clear point of reference without requiring you to take a longer loop trail.

Architectural history in several layers

The history of the Dimmit County Courthouse spans two building phases. The original courthouse was built in 1884 in the Italianate style by Bredding and Sons. It was later enclosed by the 1926 Classical Revival building designed by Henry T. Phelps. Restoration work uncovered original plaster ceilings, cornices and upper window sashes with a St. John's cross design. The different styles thus sit alongside details that came to light again during the restoration.

The Catarina Hotel also tells a story of architectural history: C.H. Kearny and Lee Peters designed and built it in 1925–1926 in the Spanish Eclectic style. The building recalls the city's boom era. Bel-Asher has a different character: San Antonio architect Alfred Giles designed the building, built in 1910; it is made of native sandstone and features widely overhanging eaves. These are distinct architectural stories—from a clearly named style to specific materials and roof forms.

The First Baptist Church was the first church built by Texas Baptists west of the Nueces River. The Richardson, Asher and Mary Isabelle House is listed on the National Register. These two facts add a historical context for the church and the house's register listing to the architectural stories.

Historic routes and remembrance

El Camino Real de los Tejas once ran through Dimmit County, connecting places such as Carrizo Springs with San Antonio, Laredo and other settlements in Texas. Espantosa Lake is part of this history too: the lake lay on the earliest route between Texas and Coahuila and was the best-known campground on Presidio Road. These two places can therefore be viewed in the context of historic routes, not as an indication of today's transport connections.

The Wade House Museum presents the Indigenous history of Dimmit County through a collection of artifacts spanning several centuries. Burleson Cemetery is the final resting place of the Burleson family. Together, these places represent different forms of historical remembrance: a collection that conveys Indigenous history through artifacts, and a cemetery with a clearly identified family history.

Town history and orientation

Asherton's development is connected to railroad history: Richardson developed the town by routing the Asherton and Gulf Railway Co. through Asherton in 1905. This detail belongs to the town's development history at the time; it does not describe a current rail connection.

Carrizo Springs has two specific municipal addresses: Veterans Park is at 405 E. Alamo St.; the Carrizo Springs Swimming Pool is located on the site at 405 N. 7th Street. Together with the mention of Carrizo Springs as a place on the historic El Camino Real de los Tejas route, this offers a view of several different facets of the place—from municipal facilities to its past.
