Along the Trinity River, Big Lake Bottom WMA preserves a hardwood bottomland forest habitat. Gently rolling pine forests and scenic lakes characterize Anderson County. Lake Palestine stretches along the Neches River in Anderson County. River bottomlands, forest and water give Anderson different natural highlights—and offer opportunities to get to know the landscape through wildlife watching, hiking, photography or fishing.

River Bottomlands, Forest and Lake

Birdwatching, hiking, photography and camping are possible at Big Lake Bottom WMA. These activities are subject to the protected area’s rules and conditions. The preserved bottomland forest and its location along the Trinity River provide a distinctive landscape setting: this is not just an outing by the water, but also a chance to experience a habitat that is being preserved.

At Lake Palestine, the water itself takes center stage. The lake is home to largemouth bass, white bass, hybrid striped bass, and channel, blue and flathead catfish; fishing is also available. Five public boat ramps provide access to the lake. This offers a choice between two nature-focused interests: the bottomland forest and its wildlife-watching opportunities on one hand, and the lake and its fishing opportunities on the other.

Nature Experiences with Different Highlights

Nature observation, birdwatching, photography, hiking and camping are also possible at Gus Engeling WMA. A Limited Public Use Permit is required for these public uses at Gus Engeling WMA; seasonal closures and permit rules must also be observed. Check the current requirements before planning your activities. A self-guided tour with nine stops adds another way to get oriented in the area.

The areas offer different highlights: Big Lake Bottom WMA preserves a hardwood bottomland forest habitat along the Trinity River; Gus Engeling WMA offers a self-guided tour with nine stops. Nature observation is possible at both places; the permit and closure rules apply to Gus Engeling, while Big Lake Bottom is subject to its own WMA rules and conditions.

Palestine: History in the Cityscape

Palestine, the county seat of Anderson County, has more than 1,800 historic sites. A particular highlight is the Palestine Main Street District: it encompasses 44 blocks and includes preserved 19th-century buildings. A Historic Walking Tour is also offered in the district. Art Tracks adds another dimension: this juried sculpture exhibition displays outdoor works at prominent locations along Main Street. Its content may change.

The Texas Jailhouse tells a specific chapter of the city’s history. Built in 1931 in the Art Deco style, the building served as the county jail for almost 55 years. Themed visitor events are also associated with it, including Haunted Little Jail in October and Grinch’s Lair in November and December. Since the program may change, check the dates before your trip.

Railroad, Spring Celebration and Local Discoveries

The Texas State Railroad offers a three-hour, 25-mile train ride through a state park, framed by 125 years of history. The trains are pulled by steam or historic diesel locomotives; the experience also includes historical commentary and food and beverage service. The Palestine Railroad Heritage Museum focuses on Domis Model RR and other railroad history exhibits. Together, the train ride and museum offer two different ways to explore: traveling by rail and viewing railroad models and exhibits.

Every spring, the Texas Dogwood Trails Celebration highlights Davey Dogwood Park and the Dogwood Trails. Dates and program details may change; check the specific information before planning your trip around the event. For a different local discovery, visit Oxbow Bakery in Old Town Palestine: it is housed in a converted former mule stable dating from the 1900s and offers more than a dozen types of cake. Hours and offerings may change, so it’s worth checking before you visit.
