On the southeastern shore of Lake Livingston, Lake Livingston State Park covers 635 acres in Polk County. The park lies at the transition between the East Texas Timber Belt and the Post Oak Savanna. Lake Livingston is on the Trinity River in Polk County and is an important white bass fishing destination. Visitors can also swim in the park.

Woodland Trails and Nature Observation

The three trails described offer different distances and scenery. At 0.9 miles, the Pineywoods Boardwalk Trail is the shortest of the three moderate trails and offers views of wetland and woodland habitats. The also-moderate Bakba Trail runs for 2 miles as a quiet woodland path. At 2.1 miles, the moderate Trinity Trace Trail is slightly longer; it connects all the park’s campsites and offers views of the forest and wildlife. The Bakba and Trinity Trace trails are therefore close in length, while the Pineywoods Boardwalk Trail is considerably shorter.

The Wildlife Viewing Area includes a bird blind and a native pollinator garden with a monarch butterfly station. Birdwatching and pollinator plants thus complement the woodland and wetland habitats visitors encounter along the trails.

History and Architecture

The Polk County Memorial Museum has more than 15,000 items related to Polk County and the East Texas region. The Polk County Courthouse features a classical design with Beaux-Arts influences. Together, the museum and courthouse offer two different ways to engage with history: an extensive collection and the architectural design of a public building.

Burials at the Old City Cemetery began in 1840 with Josephus Choate. The cemetery contains the graves of at least 25 citizens of the Republic of Texas, two Mexican War veterans, and 30 Civil War veterans. These groups represent different historical eras that come together at one site.

The Site of Old Andress Inn memorial commemorates an inn built around 1848. It housed a restaurant, saloon, grocery store, post office, and stagecoach station. The Sawyer House is listed as a Texas Historic Landmark and has a wraparound porch.

Livingston: Downtown and Heritage Park

The Livingston Main Street District spans ten blocks in the downtown area. Heritage Park is designated a State Historical Marker and has a picnic area. The park includes Locomotive No. 5 and the Jonas Davis Log Cabin. The locomotive was in service until 1952 and contributed to the development of the local timber industry. Heritage Park therefore brings together a historic designation, a cabin, and a tangible example of the region’s industrial history.

Culture and Events

In Livingston, Trade Days have welcomed locals and visitors since 1999. The annual Polk County Youth Rodeo takes place there in July. The Alabama-Coushatta hold an annual powwow on the first weekend in June; exact dates may vary. If you want to plan your trip around the powwow, check the specific event dates.

In Livingston, Matthews Street Swimming Pool offers seasonal activities, including swimming lessons for Water Babies, Water Waddles for three-year-olds, and regular swimming lessons for children ages four and up.
