Fannin County can be explored through a variety of themes: historic homes and museums offer insights into its history, while lakes, trails, and a drive through the county shape the scenic side of a trip. When choosing what to see, it helps to distinguish the options by format—from a lakeside loop to a scenic drive.

Lakes and Trails in the Landscape

Lake Bonham is a 1,020-acre recreation destination in the Prairies and Lakes region of North Texas. The lake is in Fannin County, just south of the Texas-Oklahoma border. Bonham State Park has a quiet 65-acre lake as well as rolling trails. At 1.3 miles, the Lake Loop Trail is relatively flat and circles most of the lake. These details show two different scales: Lake Bonham is the larger named recreation destination; in the state park, a specific loop trail circles most of its lake.

The Caddo National Grasslands WMA is in Fannin County near Bonham. To get there from Dallas, take US 75: after 35 miles, turn onto SH 121 toward Bonham; another 35 miles takes you to Bonham. From there, the WMA is about 15–20 miles northeast. The direction and approximate final distance help locate this stop on the map without confusing it with a trail in the state park.

A walk or bike ride along the Bois D'Arc Trail offers a glimpse of the mosaic of habitats in the Caddo National Grasslands. Birds observed there include the Summer Tanager, Painted Bunting, and Field Sparrow. The trail thus combines moving through the landscape with a look at its varied habitats and birdlife.

The Fannin County Barn Quilt Trail offers a different way to discover the county: it is designed as a scenic drive through the county, with stops spread across it. Unlike a walk or bike ride on the Bois D'Arc Trail, the focus here is on driving. Nature experiences are therefore not limited to a single format: you can choose between a trail or bike ride in the Grasslands, a lakeside loop, and a drive through the county.

Historic Homes and Museums of Fannin County

The Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site preserves Sam Rayburn’s 1916 home with original furnishings, photographs on display, and personal belongings. It is a National Historic Landmark, a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its multiple historic designations also make the site interesting to travelers who want to learn how a single home fits into broader contexts of remembrance and historic preservation.

The Sam Rayburn Museum focuses on the life and political career of Samuel Taliaferro Rayburn. Its design also gives it a distinctive character: it draws on the aesthetics of the United States capital. The museum was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 6, 2005, and recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2008. Together, the house and museum offer two different perspectives: the house centers on Rayburn’s home environment and personal belongings, while the museum focuses on his life and political career.

The Fannin County Museum of History is housed in the historic Texas and Pacific Railroad depot. Its wide-ranging exhibits cover periods from pioneer times through World War I and World War II, focusing on the county’s history across several eras. Fort Inglish Museum takes a different approach, focusing on historic buildings: the site includes three original cabins from the region, a blacksmith shop, and a schoolhouse or church.

This gives travelers a clear way to choose based on their interests: the Sam Rayburn House and Sam Rayburn Museum explore Rayburn from two angles; the depot museum covers the county’s history over longer periods, while Fort Inglish foregrounds historic cabins and other buildings. If you also want to spend time outdoors, you can think of the cultural sites separately from the options at the lake, on the trail, and along the Barn Quilt Trail, rather than treating every stop as a single route.
