A Trail Between the Fort and the Water

A nine-mile trail connects Fort Richardson State Park & Historic Site with Lost Creek Reservoir in Jack County. The Lost Creek Reservoir State Trailway follows Lost Creek to the east side of Lake Jacksboro and the reservoir. This creates a specific route through the waterside landscape, connecting two notable destinations: the historic park and the reservoir. Fort Richardson State Historical Park is on U.S. Highway 281, half a mile south of Jacksboro in Jack County.

Exploring the Trailway

The Trailway is open to hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders. Trailheads are located at Fort Richardson State Park & Historic Site and at Lost Creek Reservoir in the North Park area. The trail is ten feet wide and has a paved surface. If you’re considering which way of getting around best suits your interests, you can choose from three options: on foot, by bike, or on horseback.

The natural features along the trail are also clearly described: visitors may see wildlife and wildflowers, and shaded sections with pecan and oak trees are also part of the experience. At Rumbling Spring, groundwater rises to the surface through porous limestone and flows into Lost Creek. Here, the connection between the waterway and the underlying geology is visible.

Lake Jacksboro: Different Ways to Enjoy the Shore

In the North Park area of Fort Richardson State Park, visitors can fish from the shore of Lake Jacksboro or launch a kayak. The park also has a sandy beach there for swimming in the lake. Lake Jacksboro has a rocky shoreline with some native aquatic vegetation.

At the north end of Lake Jacksboro are a city park, two boat ramps, and an easily accessible shoreline. This makes it possible to distinguish local water activities by their focus: swimming, fishing, and launching a kayak are the main activities in North Park, while the city park and boat ramps are located at the north end of the lake.

Fort History and Local Institutions

The U.S. Army established Fort Richardson at its new location in November 1867. The fort was the northernmost point in a line of forts along the Texas frontier. Today, the hospital at Fort Richardson State Historical Park serves as a museum. The fort’s history is therefore a defining part of the Jack County visitor experience, alongside the trail and the waterside landscapes.

The Jack County Courthouse also tells the story of the county’s government: it has served as the seat of county government since 1940 and is listed in the National Register. Its historical significance and present-day function make the building another notable part of the county’s history.

Another thread in local history leads to the origins of Texas 4-H. On September 8, 1907, Tom M. Marks founded the Corn Club in Jacksboro. It developed into the 1st Texas 4-H Club. Marks’s former home became the Jack County Museum, considered the birthplace of Texas 4-H. Anyone interested in the history of the organization will find a clear connection here between its founding, development, and a specific place.

The history extends beyond the fort and museum: Jermyn was founded in Jack County in 1909 as the site of the Gulf, Texas & Western Railroad’s roundhouse, depot, and office building. Jack County is located in the North Central Prairies region.
