Four sculptures stand on the grounds of Jim Bob Art Park & Nature Trails. This rural sculpture garden is also a wildlife habitat and is located in the “breaks” landscape region of Knox County, on the outskirts of Benjamin. Knox County lies in the Rolling Plains of west-central Texas. Sculptures and wildlife habitat together shape the character of the park.

Art and Nature at Jim Bob Art Park

More art may be added and displayed. Rusty Trail is on the northeast side of the park, and construction is still underway. Along with the existing sculptures, a developing trail project and wildlife habitat are among the park’s defining features. If you’re interested in the connection between art and nature, you’ll find both here in a rural setting.

Bridges and Landforms

The Brazos River Bridge connects the Knox County seat with communities to the south. It was built in 1938–1939 to replace a bridge from 1901. It is also one of only five continuous through-truss bridges in Texas built before World War II. Its history can therefore be viewed from two perspectives: as a connection to the south and as a rare historic bridge type.

The Narrows is a ridge that separates the watersheds of the Wichita and Brazos rivers. Comanche, Wichita, Kiowa, Apache, Seminole and Tonkawa people traveled through this area. The name brings together two distinct aspects: the ridge’s hydrological function and its historic role as a passageway. Unlike the Brazos River Bridge, the focus here is not a built crossing but a natural landform.

Church, Collection and Architectural History

St. Joseph’s Church in Rhineland is a building in the German Gothic Revival style. The windows in the nave depict key events in the life of Christ, including the Nativity, the Transfiguration and the Crucifixion. This selection follows a clear narrative, from the Nativity through the Transfiguration to the Crucifixion. The Wichita-Brazos Museum and Cultural Center displays a collection of barbed wire. In contrast to the religious imagery of the church windows, this collection makes a very different material statement.

The history of school and courthouse buildings is also part of the story of Knox County. Benjamin School was built in 1896; the building was later demolished. The stone building associated with the Original Old Rock Courthouse Cornerstone replaced the wooden courthouse of 1886. Together, these two stories show different kinds of change: a school building that later disappeared, and a courthouse where wood was replaced by stone.

Music, an Autumn Tradition and Regional Context

The Bobby Boatright Memorial Music Camp is held annually in Goree. Aspiring Western swing musicians of all ages showcase their talent there. St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rhineland is also associated with a Sausage Dinner held every fall. If you’d like to plan your trip around either event, check the current dates in advance.

Beyond individual destinations, the Texas Plains Trail provides a regional framework for cultural tourism. This award-winning initiative of the Texas Historical Commission covers 52 counties. This broader perspective complements the local stories of Knox County, from bridge construction and church art to collections and recurring music and fall traditions.
