Get to know Brown County through two distinct areas to explore: trails and wildlife watching at Lake Brownwood, and Brownwood’s museums and railroad history. Nature and culture stand side by side as separate aspects of a trip, inviting you to choose your own priorities.
Trails and Nature at Lake Brownwood
Lake Brownwood State Park lies on the shore of 7,300-acre Lake Brownwood. Nearly six miles of hiking trails wind through the park; one specific route is the 2.9-mile Nopales Ridge Trail, which is also open to cyclists. This offers both an extensive trail network and an individual route with a stated length to help you find your way.
The landscape is also diverse: the park is in an area where three ecoregions meet. Wildlife and nature you may spot here include wildflowers, white-tailed deer, ducks, raccoons, armadillos, squirrels, and many bird species. Those interested in plant and animal life will find different experiences here than in Brownwood’s museums and historic buildings.
Museums of Local History and Railroads
The Brown County Museum of History presents its subjects in two buildings. The main building houses exhibits, and tours are offered through the Old County Jail. The story spans from prehistoric life to the local and global impacts of World War II. This encompasses both early ways of life and an event with far-reaching consequences.
The Brown County Jail was completed in 1903. Its design was intended to reflect the security of an ancient fortress; in Texas, it is considered one of the best-preserved examples of this fortress design. The building was renovated for use as the county museum and remains an important part of Brown County’s architectural heritage.
The Martin & Frances Lehnis Railroad Museum offers a different perspective. It showcases the railroad history of Brownwood, Central Texas, and the American Southwest. Exhibits and topics include railroad memorabilia, equipment, photographs, stories about early railroads, and operating model trains. The miniature train runs on Saturdays, weather permitting. Since schedules can change, check the latest information before your visit. The Lehnis Railroad Museum also serves as Brownwood’s visitor center.
Brownwood and Other Traces of History
The walking tour of historic downtown Brownwood begins at the old jail, which houses the museum, and returns there. Weakley-Watson Hardware is considered Brownwood’s oldest continuously operating business; its history dates back to the first store in 1876. A historic walking tour and a long-standing business history offer different ways to learn about Brownwood.
The Central Texas Veterans Memorial is located in Camp Bowie Memorial Park. It consists of 15 granite monuments and 20 metal plaques. Many traditional activities continue to be held at a historic gathering place. Together, these sites add further facets of local remembrance to the museum and city history.
Plan a Visit to the Market
The From Scratch Bazaar is a monthly arts and crafts market at Davis Floral Co. It takes place on the first Saturday of every month; offerings include baked specialties, among other things. Since event dates can change, check the latest dates before planning your visit. Nature trails, museums, and the market offer different highlights, so you can choose what to explore in Brown County based on your particular interests.
